Can BOINC be installed/configured in a NON Gui server?

Hi,

I just tried to install BOINC in my 24x7 network server but, I got a problem: The setup applications needs gtk libraries and, probably, an active X server and this machine doesn't have any of them (no keyboard, no video and only remote access). Is it possbile to use BOINC in this kind of environment?

It's an Ubuntu server 10.04.

Re: Can BOINC be installed/configured in a NON Gui server?

I'm not using Linux, but if the installer refuses to run it should be possible to use another Linux-installation to extract the relevant files, and copy them from this linux-installation to the other...

The "core" client is command-line only, and normally runs hidden as a service. How to install it as a service under Linux without the installer I've no idea...

boinccmd is a command-line tool you can use to control/monitor BOINC with, or you can enable remote controlling of BOINC and use another computer for this (OS doesn't matter on this other computer).

If you don't have another Linux-computer to extract the files, and the current BOINC-clients is impossible to extract the files without a gui, use an older BOINC-client, download from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

I would suggest you read up about installing Boinc on a Linux Server before you begin, so you know what to expect.

Good luck,

Berkeley only list back to 6.4.5, but you could look in the repositories of your version of Linux and you might find a command line only install. If not Google it; someone probably has a much earlier copy on their own web site.

The last download-group is marked "command-line interface only", so there shouldn't be any reason to try digging-up a really old BOINC-client...
