Question on profiles

Hello,

during just before the weekend I moved around machines & profiles. I linked one machine running 24/7 to the 'home' profile, which is set to be the default, and also is a custom profile. Previously, it was linked to the 'work' profile, also a custom profile, not default.

This was apparently the cause behind the fact the machine (a laptop) did not run all the weekend (I had no access to the machine).

The question is: what setting could be in that profile that told the machine to stop working? This never happened before when it was linked to the 'work' profile.

I checked the power settings and it was 'High performance" so no luck from that side.

Sorry for being a bit generic, hope you can help anyway.

Re: Question on profiles

When you say that the machine didn't do work all weekend - are you saying that World Community Grid didn't run or did the machine itself go to Sleep or Hibernate?

Re: Question on profiles

@ knreed: I guess WCG did not run, but I have no direct access to the machine, so I cannot see what happened in the log. I will try.

@ skgiven: not quite clear, are you saying I should change from the custom profile to the power saving profile?

Thanks

Re: Question on profiles

@ skgiven: not quite clear, are you saying I should change from the custom profile to the power saving profile?
No. Perhaps you have selected Stop work after computer is idle for: 20 in your customization. This is an option common to the Power Saving configuration set. Selecting Maximum Output might be a better option.

Basically, I thought you might have set the profile of the laptop to use Power Saving options, when you moved from Work to the Default group.

There are 4 device profile groups:
Default, home, work, school

You configure these and set your computers as members of these groups.

Each of these profiles can have one of 5 setting sets,
Standard Settings,
Minimum Impact,
Maximum Output,
Power Saving,
Custom Profile.

While the Custom Profile setting is a configuration set in its own right, it is also the exception, as by first selecting one of the other profiles (saving and then re-entering the same configuration page) you can then use it to configure each of the others (Standard Settings, Minimum Impact, Maximum Output, Power Saving). In other words, by selecting Custom Profile and then making changes you actually change whatever selection set was previously selected.

The naming is very confusing, "Custom Profile" for example should really be "Customize Settings", if another set of settings is already selected. After all it's not a Profile, just a method of changing (Standard Settings, Minimum Impact, Maximum Output, Power Saving) to bespoke Settings, and these "Custom Profile" settings can be different for different profiles (work, home, school, default).

So, for example you could chose the default profile, select power saving, save this, then configure it again by selecting Custom Profile. If you then set Stop work after computer is idle for: to 0:0minutes, it would remove this from the power saving configuration of the default profile.

It's possible that the laptop is set to power down, install updates, sleep/hibernate, the power was not left on/connected, or the lid was shut?

Re: Question on profiles

Thank you very much for the insight on the profiles! It is actually very misleading the name 'custom profile'.

I found out anyway that most likely the profile change has nothing to do with the laptop not crunching. The messages (in the current instance of BOINC) are starting only from yesterday 18 April, it means that sometime - I suspect on Friday - during the weekend the laptop was restarted (probably a patch).

Thanks again to all of you.
