Thanks for your help. My settings are 'exactly' like those you indicated, yet I still have about 40 work units showing "Downloading (suspended)" It just doesn't make any sense

As in all problems, the solution is the last thing you try. For some reason (whether I inadvertenlty changed it or not I don't know) I looked at the ACTIVITY tab and it was set to 'Network Activity Suspended' rather than "Network Activity Based On Preferences" This is not something I ever recall having a need to modify. Go figure. Anyhow, back up and running.
