Not bad at all. You evidently have studied it. I see what you all mean by different times, the second unit downloaded immediatels, and already is 59% done after only 3 hrs 45.
One final 'new person' question please. Do I have to do anything to get my points and total run times to show on my signature avitar, or will it appear automatically. |

Peter -- It will automagically update about an hour after the WCG updates the statistics (individual stats are updated at midnight, 06:00, 12:00 and 18:00 GMT -- Börni then updates the stats images an hour later). Your team mate, |

Please do not think when reading this that I am being bigheaded in any way, but just to let you know, I am now on my 4th unit. and I think apart fron the first one, they are averaging around 4 hours to complete.

I just finished a 9 hour one. I've done a few and they all seem to be in that range. I guess it all averages, out, eh Peter?

It's been several days since I have seen an enormous WU. That said, on the ~180-190 WUs I got (quite a few aborted), I've seen some taking up to ~120 hours.
----------------------------------------That said, now that the computer was cleaned up, it works faster. |

The size of a work unit is not really the ruling factor. We are only folding short proteins of no more than about 150 amino acids. We are skipping the long ones, unless we sometimes pick out a segment from a larger protein. That is sometimes done with Rosetta, according to research papers, but I have not been told if it is ever done in the Human Proteome Folding project. Work units take a long time if the folding process has to start taking many nearby bases (amino acid units) into account or if the heuristic algorithm assigns a large number of folds to a work unit. In general, we try to fold each protein about 10,000 times using different variables. Each work unit is assigned a number of folds, usually 120 - 500. The heuristic algorithm tries to guess the time each fold will take and varies the number of folds assigned accordingly.

Using our benchmark information, based on the gene length, we try to create work units which average about 10 to 20 hours on an average machine. However, due to the upredictable nature of the folding computation, the specific time for a particular work unit can vary from just a couple hours to well over 200 hours. The power of the machine running the work is also a large factor.
