Currently using 6.10.17 that synaptic installer showed available. Want to upgrade to current version recommended by WCG. Been looking in th FAQ without success to do this. I don't want to loose my current wu's I have in the hopper. Can this be done or is it best to run dry, uninstall, then reinstall? Currently running ubuntu 10.4.

Hi Bearcat.
----------------------------------------Have a look here under apps/science & which version of Ubuntu your using they have newer app versions for it. GetDeb Or you could add them to synaptic and do it that way, i can't remember all the steps just Google it, but when i installed i made sure boinc was shut down before i did the update and you should not loose any work. Thanks for the info. Will give it a shot in the morning after I upload (in case is screw up). Never used GetDeb but looks self explanatory enough.

I install using synaptic by uninstalling the old Boinc first doing it this way then install the new one. I never did the update from the website. Configure the repository manually: Go to System-Administration-Software Sources, Third-Party Software tab, Add: deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu lucid-getdeb apps Add the repository GPG key, open a terminal window and type: wget -q -O- http://archive.getdeb.net/getdeb-archive.key | sudo apt-key add - |

Hi Bearcat I assume you mean Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid). I'm running this as well (64-bit), using BOINC Manager 6.10.17 and am quite happy with this version. I see no reason to change. After all this is merely the manager. You could run the applications in command line mode as well.

Just having a few little issues with climate prediction and periodic messages while uploading stating connecting to boinc host (think that's what it said). Probably should have stayed on ubuntu 10.10 instead of downgrading. Didn't have issues like this. I'll wait until my hopper is dry (will be a little while to fininsh climate) before I decide which path I will take. Thanks for the help.

Last time I tried a Boinc update on Linux I lost all running tasks, so I would finish any running tasks. You could abort non-started tasks, but I don't like to do this for a number of reasons, not least it uses up bandwidth.
The error messages might just be down to the climate project: they have been having problems for some time. Might be resolved by now, but a month or so ago I was waiting for weeks to upload files. I stopped crunching for them as I wanted to reinstall two systems. |
