Hi there,
I was just wondering if using BOINC causes a higher wear and tear (I had to search in a dictionary to find this word, and I have to say, I hate it.... If it's the wrong word in this context, please inform me and tell me right one^^) to my hardware? OK, World Community Grid only uses the CPU which is by default(?) set to use all Cores and 60% of their CPU time. Now I'm also donating to Einstein@Home and both, WCG and E@H share 50:50 of the CPU and E@H uses the GPU too. I'm not quite sure if it's that brilliant to donate to many projects. My current machine is only a few months old and I don't expect it to break in the next few years. But I'm a bit worried what could cause this high usage of CPU (and for E@H the usage of the GPU). Any experience or meanings on that matter? Thanks |

Running BOINC projects will cause your computer to run hotter, so if you are running anywhere near 24/7, a monthly dust-off would be a wise investment.
----------------------------------------. . . with that in mind, your computer should have no problem lasting well into the time it becomes obsolete, now about four years. ![]() |

For the more lazy of us there are inlet fan filters, and for those that like to hear the phone ring there are water cooling systems. Using these would help the components last longer, but as Sid2 says the life expectancy of a computer is limited (2-5years), so you might as well get as much use out of it as you can. Also, the only thing that really matters on a computer is the data; as long as you have a backup you have little to worry about.

CPUs generally have no problems running 24/7 at 100%, as long as you keep temperatures within the design parameters. (And voltages, if you are into overclocking.)
GPUs appear to be different. Unlike CPUs they are not designed to run at 100% for years at end, and from what I have seen on the Folding@Home forums GPUs do indeed seem to wear out more quickly when used for folding. I don't remember how quickly, but seem to recall people with lots of dedicated GPUs saying that it wore out the cards in a year or two. I'm fairly confident about what I'm saying about CPUs here, and have my own experience to back it up. But for GPUs I'm just retelling what I've heard; caveat lector. |

Thanks for the answers! I really worried about my PC since my notebook broke a few days ago although it was only 1 month younger than my PC.
