Hi all,
----------------------------------------I have decided to join the effort for Beta Testing a couple of weeks ago and I have checked the boxes on all my profiles (currently using 3 - one for each machine) and yet I have received no such units so far. I am not using local preferences on any of these 3 machines, but the profiles from the site. Is there something that I should do or doing wrong, or should I believe that there were no such units in the past 2-3 weeks? Thanks in advance! Knowledge is limited. Beta WU's are very rare, and when they do come (best to keep an eye on the Beta testing forum for news), they're very quickly snapped up - as there's generally only a few thousand for each run.
----------------------------------------There are various tips/techniques you can use to raise your chances of getting some when they're around, but for that, you'll have to read the various threads [Edit 2 times, last edit by gb009761 at Mar 25, 2011 11:40:59 AM] |

Oh, I see. I guess that kind of falls into the third category: maybe there haven't been any lately or I haven't been one of the "lucky" few.

It's really hard for the average cruncher to get many Beta WU; it's just the way the math works.
Yesterday WCG did 667,000 WU and you are averaging 2 per day and we have nearly 100,000 active crunchers. If there are 4000 Beta WU released there is 1 Wu for every 25 crunchers. So there's that. In addition, my Quad polls for a new WU about 18 times per day, giving me 18 chances in 24 hours to pickup 1 in 25 WU. At 2 Wu per day, you are only getting 2 chances in 24 hours. Plus if all 4k WU are gobbled up in an hour, the window might be closed before you even have a chance. So there's the math, but don't give up. I started with one single core computer for a while. |

The results status seems to be going quite fast these days; I looked yesterday and there was 7 returned, all picked up in the last week, today only 1 is listed. So even if you do get one, you might not know about it. They also seemed to complete quite quickly; on an reasonable system <2h. So even if you get a few of these betas you're probably not going to progress much towards the next badge anyway. The time you can make significant badge progress is when a new project is about to launch - there tends to be many more betas.

Thanks, skgiven. I'm not out badge hunting, I was just curious why I don't get this type of units. However, I would assume that if I did get one, it would show up in my Results page, which is not the case.
----------------------------------------Anyway, I got my answer, thanks again! Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world! - Albert Einstein [Edit 1 times, last edit by CandymanWCG at Mar 27, 2011 9:51:23 AM] |
