Points are calculated on *effort* which is a combination of the computer's general abilities and how long it actually takes to complete the task Actually, points are calculated on results, ie: the number of Floating Point Operations (Teraflops or Gigaflops) that each computer completes. You get 100,000 credits for each TFlop you complete (or 700,000 points). If it takes you 90 calendar days to do a TFlop, then you get 100,000 credits each 90 days. If it takes you 17 days to calculate a TFlop, then you get 100,000 credits every 17 days. Simple. Easy. Fair. ![]() If it's all about the points, then join a project that rewards you with 500,000 credits per TFlop instead. ![]() |

Why do we continue to have these discussions about points/rankings/speed/whatever? I've said it before, if you're doing this for points/recognition/badges/whatever, you're doing it for the wrong reasons. Because people are interested in the credit system. This is a crunching forum and a speed & credit thread - a good place to discuss these things, especially following project changes.[ot]People can crunch for whatever reason they like, and what you think is the right or wrong reason is your opinion, not everyone's. It's the computers that actually do the crunching, and the scientists that do the research. We just hook them up and talk about it. Take away the talk part and there is not much involvement; there wouldn't even be the need for a forum in which to display your shiny Forum Profile. You would have no recognition at all. If this is what you want you could be anonymous[/ot] |

Why do we continue to have these discussions about points/rankings/speed/whatever? I've said it before, if you're doing this for points/recognition/badges/whatever, you're doing it for the wrong reasons. I agree with skgiven's views. The forum serves as a social venue for crunchers to discuss matters around their experiences in crunching for whatever reason they do their crunching, be it for badges, points, runtimes, and all other material/visible symbols of having participated in the crunching of WUs, as well as for reasons that we have some loved ones who were affected by the disease of which a project seeks some way for a solution. Emotions are inevitably involved and understandable when loved ones are lost from a disease. The good thing is this: a cruncher chasing badges, for example, also participates in the search for a solution even though that cruncher does not care much for the solution. Similarly, a cruncher who is on the crunching of a disease-solution-related-WU will have some measure of the extent of his/her contribution thus-far through the badges, even though the badges are not something the cruncher cares about. To the extent that a machine's performance translates to hastening the search for a solution, we cannot but also concern ourselves with how the machine is doing -- any more than we can ignore an automobile's performance just because all we care about is to get to our destination. Rather than see those crunchers who like engaging in computer-related stuffs as doing their crunching for the wrong reasons, try to think of them as mechanics and engineers constantly arguing about the best way to optimize the engine so you can have the fastest, most comfortable, and safest ride to your destination ! ![]() -------- ;Edit1: 2011.04.19Tu.1550UTC > Grammar improvements. ; [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 19, 2011 3:50:10 PM] |

Perhaps you did not understand what I was saying I understand you the way you speak. I'm not a native speaker so no need to shakespear here. As I have said, I crunch to help save lives. Credits are about 5% of my motivation. As for filth, not necessary. By filth I implied aids, cancer & so on, so I didn't again understand it about "not necessary". Don't wanna be a bore, but what "not necessary"? Calling aids filth or what?Forget about projects like primegrid or DNETC@home(which from what I can tell is for profit to the developers).Forget these useless math projects. If you want to use a GPU for BOINC then use it for GPUGRID and not collatz or SETI@home or milkyway@home. Golden words, Falconet. These are my thoughts, too. I really hope that someday all these dnetces, collatzes & all other enigmas fall into an unimaginable abyss, deep as a black hole and free world's computational power for more important & urgent goals. Dixi. |

Probably should start a new thread or highjack another points thread... Excuse me? Maybe you should ask yourself the question would I do this if there were no points, badges or recognition of any kind?
In 1969 I took an oath to defend and protect the U S Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and Domestic. There was no expiration date.

Excuse me? Maybe you should ask yourself the question would I do this if there were no points, badges or recognition of any kind? If you want my opinion - yes, of course. Crunching isn't difficult 4 me. As I have said above, credits are 5% of my motivation. If I was after credits, I'd look 4 > profitable projects. |

I personally don't run the software because of points, badges, or recognition. |

Crunchers crunch WUs for points or for science and have them both. I do not see any conflict here. To force a camp to take the view of the other camp is not in anyone's interest, nor of the science. Keep crunching everyone. We have a lot to cover!
