My first computer turns 30 tomorrow !!!

http://www.reghardware.com/2011/03/04/sinclair_zx81_anniversary/

you know what that makes me.....? Old

biggrin

From my distant now dim recollection I think it might have run at 4MHz and it had 1K RAM with BASIC onboard. I did get the 16K Ram pack but it would fall off after loading a program for 8 mins from a tape (Philips compact cassette - pre MP3 wink) 8 bit programming

It was awesome

Today I run this

4Mhz to 6*3Ghz
8 Bit to 64 Bit Computing
1Kb to 4Gb Memory (Yet still not enough)
Compact Cassette to 1Tb HD and 80Gb SSD

Not to mention the real time 3D rendering machine

Back then you connected you computer to the Black and White Telly. Today I connect that USB Stick to watch Telly on my Computer.

So that's the changes over the last 30 years

Here's to the next

Dave

Re: My first computer turns 30 tomorrow !!!

Oh my gosh! Thanks for posting the link; wouldn't have wanted to miss it! My first computer was a Sinclair ZX81 also -- I built it from a kit and learned to program in BASIC and Z80 machine language. Oh the memories! Saving and loading programs on cassette tapes was such a hit-or-miss operation.

I still have the little thing somewhere -- will have to dig it out to observe the anniversary!

Kateiacy I keep trying to buy one on Ebay to show my Kids

But they go like hot cakes

If you still have one take good care of it. The thing that is likely to be a problem in the future is the availability of an analogue TV or tuner to show those lovely black and white blocky pixels biggrin

Re: My first computer turns 30 tomorrow !!!

My 1st so called computer was a commodore Vic 20, then a IBM 8088, apple IIc, IBM 386w/micro channel, 484 -can't remember brand, apple 6400 performa, couple of dells pentium 1 through 4's. My best now is a dual quad westmere system. God I spent a ton of cash with one heck of a passion. You know what they say, if it feels good, DO IT! Can't wait for the 10 core westmeres to come out.

Atari 800XL, play games using game cartridges, make apps and games on BASIC. Loading things from cassette tapes was a pain.

Addicted to River Raid for almost a year. :)
