Hi all,
I have a Windows 7 x64 PC (Q6600 2.4Ghz, Intel G31 chipset). It crunches well when in use, but when I am away it seems to go into some power saving mode (but not sleep), as evidenced by the CPU temperature being low right after I unlock the machine, dramatically reducing crunching performance. When I first noticed it, I have changed the power scheme from Balanced to High Performance - doesn't seem to help much. Unless I am using my PC it processes only ~4-6 HCC WUs in a day at 100% of CPU available for Boinc. My other core 2 duo 2.53Ghz HP PC consistently produces 10-15 WUs with seemingly similar settings. Any advice how to fix it? |

Please look over the BOINC message log and copy / paste any lines here that suggest that BOINC is going to sleep... BOINC can if there is no keyboard/mouse input for a while so that the ACPI or whatever would be able to kick in. The quickest fix is to set the BOINC activity menu to "Run Always".

Hi SekeRob - I think you are right - there is a "Suspending computation" message and then "Resuming..." exactly when I moved the mouse to wake up computer. The strange thing is that I immediately set the option to "Run Always" after I saw your response, but the computation still got suspended.
I also see there is a <suspend_if_no_recent_input>20</suspend_if_no_recent_input> tag in the global_prefs.xml, and I suspect this is the reason. It's strange that I don't see any corresponding option in the GUI. Either way I'll try to modify it and/or upgrade Boinc (I suspect my version may be a bit old) and see if it helps. To this day it's beyond me why this option only exists in the website profiles and has not been ported to the GUI prefs... not in 6.12 either and it's a major gotcha. Don't know either why that option ignores Run Always, but if you change the website profile
Stop work after computer is idle for: 0 minutes to zero and hit update in the client it should end and else... gremlins were conceived in Berkeley so I'm told. --//-- |

Yeah, just found it on the website as well and set it to 0. It'll try to provide feedback to Boinc team as well.

Wow the same thing just happened to 2 of 3 of my computers.
So they sat there half a day doing nothing... >>no recent user activity I wonder what is even the purpose of this setting ? >>Stop work after computer is idle for: 20.0 minutes I thought the whole idea was to use Idle CPU time ![]() |

It's the default of the "Power Savings" profile and is set to zero in the Maximum Output / Default and Minimum Impact profiles [FAQ http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=17033 ], so guess you can guess what it's function is with you [likely] having chosen Power Savings at one time ;>)

you might try to go into windows power settings and click on the changed ADVANCED POWER SETTINGS. Go down the list and everywhere hybernation and sleep is located change to never.
----------------------------------------I use to a long time ago have that problem but this stoped all the boinc idle time.. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 27, 2011 12:51:17 PM] |

Changing windows power settings (like never go to sleep, never hybernate, stay at high performance) didn't help me. From what I understand as long as Boinc gets <suspend_if_no_recent_input> set to anything other than 0, your computer will be up and running, but Boinc will be doing nothing after the specified period of inactivity, regardless of your OS power settings.
Two of my quadcore computers wasted lots of cycles over the past two years because of this issue. Great we've finally figured it out. |
