Re: Transient upload error

These three tasks have been downloading for about half a day.

E201400_ 951_ A.29.C24H17N3SSi.282.3.set1d06_ 0-- w In Progress 04/03/11 19:01:47 14/03/11 19:01:47 0.00 0.0 / 0.0
E201400_ 908_ A.29.C26H17NS2.302.3.set1d06_ 0-- w In Progress 04/03/11 19:01:27 14/03/11 19:01:27 0.00 0.0 / 0.0
E201400_ 869_ A.29.C21H13NS5Si2.59.4.set1d06_ 1-- w In Progress 04/03/11 19:01:08 14/03/11 19:01:08 0.00 0.0 / 0.0

They have reached 100% several times and then started from 0% again. They reduced my ability to get other WCG tasks. Each task has been downloading for a total of 4 1/2 h. At 60MB each and because of 9h of downloading my Internet bandwidth has been throttled back, further restricting my ability to run other tasks, and on more than one system.

In Boinc Manager under Tasks I aborted these tasks, but they still kept downloading. When I aborted the transfer they went away, but I suspect the server might want to resend them, again - got a lot of server resends recently. I have unselected the project in the hope this will prevent any resends.

@skgiven: This is an odd problem because these files are not locked on our server. So this seems to be a different problem. I'll forward this issue to our friends at IBM, maybe they have an idea what's going on here. Hope you are coming back to CEP2 soon.

Re: Transient upload error

They have reached 100% several times and then started from 0% again. They reduced my ability to get other WCG tasks. Each task has been downloading for a total of 4 1/2 h. At 60MB each and because of 9h of downloading my Internet bandwidth has been throttled back, further restricting my ability to run other tasks, and on more than one system.

The WCG download-server doesn't support resuming of downloads, so if for any reason the download doesn't finish in a single go it will re-start from zero. As for going past 100%, the client doesn't know the server doesn't support resuming, so thinks it continues from the place it should have been doing. Only then the full file is transferred successfully does the client correct for the lack of download-resuming, by removing the start of the file.

So if example you've downloaded 27%, it will continue from 27% next try, but if it goes past 100% but not fully to 127% you've not really got the whole file, and everything past 27% is removed before next try.

Download re-starting from zero isn't so common, but if it didn't reach 100% in a single go, you've not got the file, so again needs to re-start download from scratch.

In Boinc Manager under Tasks I aborted these tasks, but they still kept downloading. When I aborted the transfer they went away, but I suspect the server might want to resend them, again - got a lot of server resends recently. I have unselected the project in the hope this will prevent any resends.

The large 60 MB CEP2-file is part of the application, and any application-files won't be deleted even client doesn't currently have any tasks using this application. So the file will be re-tried downloaded on each client-start.

A reset of WCG should fix this problem, until next time you asks and gets some CEP2-work, but remember all work currently on client will be lost, and most other project-files will also be deleted and needs to be re-downloaded...

Re: Transient upload error

The WCG download-server doesn't support resuming of downloads
That explains the strange download behavour. I'm familiar with upload resuming on other projects, and don't normally see downlaod problems like this. Many thanks Ingleside.

Perhaps with multiple concurrent 60MB downloads resume would be useful for WCG. That line supports systems running 42 different tasks - it's well used.

cleanenergy, I will be back when I have reached my HFCC targets, just a few weeks to go.
