I have two systems that I could be running the client on. One of the systems could pretty much be 24/7 as it is generally not in use. My second system is used frequently.
Is it possible to setup in such a way that idle system could be researching on all projects and my more used system perhaps only one one project but to all be under the same user id? Also, how can I tell the client on one system to finish all remaining computations but to stop requesting new ones (for a time) while not affecting the other system? Thank you, |

Yes. Create an account on the World Community Grid web page and set up two different "profiles." You can choose the specific projects you want under each profile (as well as other settings, like hours of operation). After you have installed BOINC on both of your machines and attached to World Community Grid (using your same username and password for both), you can come back to your account on the web page and associate each of the machines with one of the profiles.

Hi Malander, welcome to WCG and the forum.
----------------------------------------To expand on kateiacy answer: the first part of what you want to do can be accomplished using the BOINC "Device Profiles". The second is one that I haven't found an easy answer to. When you install BOINC on a PC it will ask for the Project you want to connect to (WCG), your user id and password. All PC's you install on will be attached to your account at the project and you will receive credit for the work done by all of them (I have today 9 doing work under my account). BOINC provides a way to have up to 4 different work profiles, that is, what sub-project (such as HCC HFCC, CEP2, etc.), cache, disk space, etc. The way to do what you want is to install BOINC on the PC's and then associate different profiles. To accomplish what you want will require using 2 of the 4 (it doesn't make any difference which by the way). I would recommend you configure the 2 profiles you want to use and then associate them with a device. To configure the profiles do this: Select the "My Grid" tab On the left side is a list of links - select "Device Manager" Under "Device Manager" will then be a "Device Profiles" link. Select that and there will be 4 choices in the main body of the page Select the first you wish to use On the "Device Profile" page select "Custom Profile" then choose the configuration that meets the 24x7 device profile you want, as an example this would be the "work" profile. After you have set the options you want scroll to the bottom and click the "Save" button. The go back to the "Device Profiles" selection and click on the second (example "home"). Configure it for the other PC and save the configuration. To associate them to a device select the "Device Manager" link. You will see a list of your devices with their current profile. Click on the device name and then select the profile you configured for it and click the “Save” button. Bill P

... Also, how can I tell the client on one system to finish all remaining computations but to stop requesting new ones (for a time) while not affecting the other system? In BOINC client, using the advanced view, look for the "Projects" tab, select "World Community Grid" and click on the button "No new tasks". It will continue working on the already downloaded tasks, but won't ask for new ones. Just remember to upload the tasks once they finish (in the same place, use the "Update" button) and the day when you're ready to continue, click the button "Allow new tasks". |

More advanced, there is a boinccmd instruction to be run in a cmd window, or from a shortcut to do this:
----------------------------------------nomorework: finish current work but don't get more This would be the same as if done within BOINC Manager. If then not wanting to forget to switch work fetch back on when powering up, configure a startup shortcut to execute allowmorework: undo nomorework This is the wiki: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Boinccmd So for WCG that would be "c:/program files/boinc/boinccmd" --project www.worldcommunitygrid.org nomorework and "c:/program files/boinc/boinccmd" --project www.worldcommunitygrid.org allowmorework What can then be done is to let BOINC finish off what it has and when the system goes idle, for it to hibernate or power down unattended. Maintaining a short cache of for instance 0.01 days makes sure that there will be hardly any work cached beyond what is presently being crunched. Just a suggestion. --//-- edit: Included path, so the command is executed from anywhere. On a 64 bit windows system, a 32 bit client path would be "c:\program files(86)\boinc\boinccmd" in quotes as Windows does otherwise not understand paths with spaces.
