instead of 1 unit per processor? i'm on an intel quad core system with xp and 3gb RAM and would rather have it done this way on my system, is it possible please?

Not possible. There's only 1 or 2 projects in the whole of BOINC world that do SMP (One task, multi-threaded), but the names escape me presently... Aqua maybe and something at CPDN being under development. Got 5Gb ram to handle that?

Hi RSmith68,
You can specify 1 - (max number of cores) to run on a computer. The default is the nu8mkber of cores, but if you select My Grid - Device Manager and then click on your selected profile (I suggest Home rather than Default) then you can set many parameters if you choose Custom Profile, such as:
On multiprocessors, at most use: 1 processors
On multiprocessors, use: 25.0% of processors
which will run one process on a quad-core CPU rather than 4.

ty both for answering, but the above answered my question. would rather it be that 1 unit per system, rather than per processor in a system. makes more sense to me is all

was looking into linux, and it has a means called distcc, to compile software across multiple systems, and have it installed to 1 in particular, could something like this be done for WCG's mgr app?

Re: can WCG client run only 1 unit on a multiprocessor system?

BOINC is multithread enabled... it's the science apps that would require major recoding and since timing is everything, probably a very tough case to have them produce the exact same result, the question there then being what the gain is over 1 per processor core. There's a reason I suppose of why of the 100s of BOINC projects just a few have adopted the SMP route... maybe developed ground up, whereas most of these projects run on engines that have been developed over sometimes decades and or run on top of commercial software that is not enabled either and to which WCG has no rights to modify the source code.

Re: can WCG client run only 1 unit on a multiprocessor system?

While there is a general lack of multithreaded programming skills and tools this will inevitably change; the number of cores/threads is now increasing rapidly and the focus on multithreaded programming is increasing. Although on existing/past Boinc projects, multithreading sometimes left a CPU somewhat underutilized at times, segregated threads tend to have some impact on most projects, manifesting itself in a discrepancy between runtime and elapsed time for many Boinc projects. This is most apparent when running a high number of CEP2 tasks due their high I/O requirements on hard drives. While CPUs are now better designed to run multithreaded tasks, such hard drive limitations, and programming weaknesses are not going to be resolved easily, cheaply or soon; it will require the development of new programming tools and take the widespread move to PCIE 3.0 before we see major changes, and by then the number of cores/threads could well have risen to a much higher number relative to the rate of I/O capabilities for standard system drives, the problems will escalate. While it'€™s normal for CPU technologies to trail blaze and supporting technologies to follow this time adaptation has been particularly slow.
