Novel Treatment Thoughts for ALS

This wouldn't be a cure, but has anyone attempted to treat ALS by developing an electronic implant composed of an electromyographic sensor and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator?

The idea is that you'd grab a signal from the brain side of a damaged neural junction with an EMG and relay the message via TENS to the appropriate muscle. Basically a repeater to jump over an open circuit. Such an implant would work like an implantable pace maker or pain management device.

My background is in electrical engineering so I may be way off the ball here, but am curious to hear from someone familiar with the physiology.

Re: Novel Treatment Thoughts for ALS

As it turns out researchers are working on what I suggested above. The idea is to bypass damaged spinal cords with an electronic implant. I'm wondering if the same idea could be used in ALS.
