Following on from the Sandy Bridge processors, this year will see an influx of new CPU's with a common many core strategy, leading to more economic performances per Watt systems:
As well as Bulldozer AMD is set to release 6 core (40W; 6.67W per core), 8, 12 and 16 core Opteron CPUs. They have also cut the prices of their Phenom II processors, including the 6 Core desktop processors. ARM has a new Cortex a15 and plans afoot to increase performance to 100X their present processors within 3 years. As well as further SB based CPUs for laptops, desktops and servers, Intel has a server processor called the Knights Ferry, a 500 gigaflops processor system. It comprises 32 Quad thread Xeon CPU cores @1.2GHz in the CPU socket, looks like a GPU and uses GDDR5. This prototype has 80 threads Intel is planning a 50+ core commercial version (Kings Corner) based on 22nm technology. Microsoft are asking for 16core Atom processors for servers, but start-up SeaMicro already has a 512 processor atom server. |

I applaud the movement to more cores and more processors, but these high power systems have a high power price tag to go along with them. The 512 core SeaMicro system has a suggested price of $139,000. Just a little out of my price range. The Sandy Bridge items appear to be reasonably affordable however. Cheers

Just highlighting the increasing efficiencies and competition across the full spectrum of processors, from 1W palmtops right through to exotic cloud designs. Not saying anyone should buy a cloud server :p

I think we are more likely to see a few of these in due course,

The recold holder on the top of the Green 500 is the IBM machine with 1.6 Gigaflop per watt.
----------------------------------------If I take the Boinc benchmark of one of my top rigs I can output on a good day 63'000 points from GPUGrid and 7'000 points fro WCG that is a total of 70'000 Boinc points on one day. This does translate to 70'000 / 200 = 350 Gigaflops. At 1.6 GFlops per watt I should consume something like 218 Watts. Nope I am not at that level yet. Probably the double. ![]() |

Just bought two Xenon 3.33 ghz six core processors. I am probably already obsolete! 3K for obsolete processors , go figure. Fell like I am one of the customers in the movie " Man who fell to earth"! Am building this machine as tired of being run over everyday, use to be 10k points/day was really good. Now it takes twenty plus to do that. We will see how long it takes once new machine up before I start bearing tire tracks on my forehead!!!

As well as the new i7-990X, Intel has released a few more efficient but pricey Xeon versions of the processor.
Specifications and new prices table: Core i7-990X 6 (12) 3,46GHz 130W / 999 dollar Xeon X5690 6 (12) 3,46GHz 130W / 1663 dollar Xeon X5675 6 (12) 3,06GHz 95W / 1440 dollar Xeon E5649 6 (12) 2,53GHz 80W / 774 dollar Xeon E5645 6 (12) 2,4GHz 80W / 551 dollar Read more: http://www.guruht.com/2011/02/intel-core-i7-9...dition.html#ixzz1EyfIcWB9 A pair of E5649/E5645 Xeon's could do some serious work here and challenge for the performance per Watt crown ; |
