Yes, BIONC.exe is running. I am using Windows 7. I am using the most recent version of the software. There are absolutely no messages in the message tab of any kind. In thinking about this issue, I realize that the problems began immediately after I installed an nVidia GeForce 7900 GS video card. I have done some experimentation and if I remove the drivers and reboot, the BIONC client is able to reattach, same as when I boot into safe mode. However, once Windows installs the device with the drivers it finds and I reboot, BIONC is no longer able to connect. I have tried using the drivers Windows finds as well as downloading the latest drivers from nVidia but have the same problem. In my mind this seems to suggest there is an issue between the nVidia drivers and the BIONC client but I have no idea how to resolve it. OK, in the BM, go to the "Advanced" menu and hit "Select Computer". When that opens, enter "localhost" without the quotes and tab, not mouse, to the password field. The password field should self-complete. If not, we'll go to the next step, but suggest to reinstalll as per my previous post. ttyl [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 29, 2011 5:20:52 PM] |

I tried entering localhost and the password auto-filled as you explained. Clicked OK and still only seeing "reconnecting to client." I have uninstalled 3 times. I have used both ccleaner and reglife to clean the registry as well as going through the registry manually to delete all references to BIONC. No luck.
I suspect if I were to switch video cards the problem will resolve. I don't know if my previous video card is fried completely or not but I will try to install it later and see what happens. The fact that BIONC works correctly in Windows "safe mode" as well as the problem occurring immediately following my install of the nVidia card with no other changes to any software or hardware including firewall and antivirus suggests a driver/device conflict to me. Does that sound like a viable hypothesis to you? If so, do you have any idea how to proceed? |

What security software have you got running? Could be it's blocking the RPC calls over localhost (IP 127.0.0.1). Port 31416 needs to be open too.
----------------------------------------edit: We could try a few tricks later to see if we can get the client to attach to WCG with boinccmd... long as boinc.exe is loaded. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 29, 2011 8:33:56 PM] |

I don't know if this will solve your problem or not, however...
----------------------------------------A few years back when I installed an nvidia GEforce video card on an older computer I had major problems getting things to work properly. I finally gave up and contacted the Nvidia people and was told to ignore the software that came with the video card and instead was directed to www.guru3d.com and was told which of the drivers at that website to download and install. Did just that and everything worked perfectly. Don't know if this will solve your problem, however it might be worth a shot. Guru3d.com is one of (maybe the only) official site(s) for nvidia software downloads. If it is a software/driver problem you may find the solution there. Good Luck with your problem. ![]() ![]() ![]() "Everything in moderation, including moderation" -- Mark Twain [Edit 1 times, last edit by osugrad at Jan 29, 2011 9:45:46 PM] |

I am almost ashamed to comment here in that I really do not understand the problem. In the BOINC Manager, Advanced view, Preferences, make sure the "Use GPU while computer is in use" is not checked. ..... a shot in the dark.

Me not understand either, RT, so we(i) take it one step at the time.
GPU use pref is default "off" during use. Step 1 is the BM connecting to the Core Client to even get any information, but the BM is not needed. Most all can be done with boinccmd and if that cannot connect, at least the terminal screen should offer some feedback. E.g boinccmd --get_state will give a report such is this for one of the running tasks: 106) ----------- name: ts02_c026_pr34a0_0 WU name: ts02_c026_pr34a0 project URL: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ report deadline: Tue Feb 8 19:34:13 2011 ready to report: no got server ack: no final CPU time: 0.000000 state: 2 scheduler state: 0 exit_status: 0 signal: 0 suspended via GUI: no active_task_state: 0 stderr_out: app version num: 0 checkpoint CPU time: 0.000000 current CPU time: 0.000000 fraction done: 0.000000 swap size: 0.000000 working set size: 0.000000 estimated CPU time remaining: 27094.835951 supports graphics: no or boinccmd --get_host_info timezone: 3600 domain name: itsasecret IP addr: 192.xxx.xxx.xxx #CPUS: 4 CPU vendor: GenuineIntel CPU model: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz [Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 7] CPU FP OPS: 2265985275.180629 CPU int OPS: 6755169503.122730 CPU mem BW: 1000000000.000000 OS name: Linux OS version: 2.6.35-25-generic mem size: 3097038848.000000 cache size: 4194304.000000 swap size: 3209687040.000000 disk size: 73276964864.000000 disk free: 36981481472.000000 All status commands shown below to include the development options: --get_cc_status That it runs in safe-mode could be the security software again (it is/was a first to me that a VDU card/drivers stops/stopped the BM connecting to the core client) and drcheshire being on W7, returning to a restore point where it worked, including all drivers is peanuts. Truly forget about that concept in Linux... that's handson business. |

Just thought I would drop you guys an update. I purchased an AMD video card (HD 5550), installed it, and poof BOINC works just fine now. Just to check the experiment, I then uninstalled the AMD card and replaced it with the nVidia card and poof, same old cannot "connect to the local server" problem. nVidia out and AMD in again and poof, all works again. Has to be something with the nVidia drivers or hardware or something in my mind. Regardless, the problem is now solved and BIONC is crunching numbers just fine.
Thank you all very much for your help. I'm sticking with AMD from here on out! |

I'm sticking with AMD from here on out! How very strange. I have used nVidia for years without issues. It must be a bug in the nVidia drivers something along the line of SekeRob post of 1/29 blocking RPC calls over localhost. I would not be surprised if osugrad were on the right track. Later versions of the drivers might have fixed it. Oh well...another one of the great mysteries of life. ![]() Oklahoma State? ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by RT at Jan 31, 2011 2:20:08 PM] |

I have the same error message since I installed the last version of the client. I can't seem to get the client to connect to boinc.exe. In fact boinc.exe seem to be crashing and relaunching. I've tried reinstating many times with no success.
I need help |

I had the same problem running Windows 7, but with an AMD graphics card installed. I followed SekeRob's instructions of checking the appropriate boxes on install of the boinc prog and after reboot, voila! It works just fine.
Because I had the exact same problem as drcheshire, but was running an AMD card when the problem occurred, I don't think it's the graphics card that was causing the problem. But I can't argue with him is changing his graphics card fixed his problem. Can only tell you what happened in my situation. Thanks SekeRob 4 the quick fix. |
