Hi everybody,
SekeRob is absolutely right - if there are too many threads with I/O to one harddrive at the same time it can clog up and the system performance will drop dramatically (although it shouldn’t cause errors, and the actual size is not the main issue). 2 jobs should be perfectly fine and we even usually don’t see much of an impact with 3-4 jobs. People on the forum reported even more than that without problems, but this is very hardware dependent. You can fill up remaining CPUs with less demanding projects. We have prepared a ‘Tips and Tricks’ sheet for custom settings which is currently being vetted by our friends at IBM. We hope to post this soon. Best wishes Your Harvard CEP team |

The Clean Energy Project: The Clean Energy Project needs your help. Due to its large file sizes and above-average use of disk operations, we have designated the project as "opt-in". That means that you have to take action to participate. We encourage you to take a look at the system requirements for this project, and determine if your computer is capable of participating. If yes, then give it a try on your computer by going to your My Projects page and selecting The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2. You may learn more about this exciting project here. ... you get... 18/03/2011 21:56:49 World Community Grid [sched_op_debug] Starting scheduler request 18/03/2011 21:56:49 World Community Grid Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. 18/03/2011 21:56:49 World Community Grid Requesting new tasks for CPU 18/03/2011 21:56:49 World Community Grid [sched_op_debug] CPU work request: 1.00 seconds; 0.69 CPUs 18/03/2011 21:56:49 World Community Grid [sched_op_debug] ATI GPU work request: 0.00 seconds; 0.00 GPUs 18/03/2011 21:56:53 World Community Grid Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks 18/03/2011 21:56:53 World Community Grid [sched_op_debug] Server version 601 18/03/2011 21:56:53 World Community Grid Message from server: No work sent 18/03/2011 21:56:53 World Community Grid Message from server: No work available for the applications you have selected. I have two computers that are running cep. One intel duo that is allowed one cep at the time, and one I7 870 with 8 gb ram and SSD hardrive that are allowed to run four cep at the time. That is working fine. And it is always one and four cep's in the cahce unless its just reported one.
----------------------------------------Bottom line here.... I have never had a problem with the worflow in this project. It seems like it has a higher priority then clean water, AIDS, HPF2, etc... |

Hello adrianxw,
There are a lot of restrictions if you run BOINC on default parameters. This is supposed to help naive computer users from overworking their computers. I eliminate almost all restrictions since I claim to know what I am doing. (When a cat takes a tumble, it gets up and stalks proudly away, head held high, not looking to see if anybody noticed the stumble. I'm almost like that. I grudgingly admit a few stupid mistakes, but mostly I keep quiet.) There is probably some restriction in your BOINC / project settings that keeps you from getting that CEP2 work unit. Lawrence |
