Hi all,
----------------------------------------I tried searching the forum, but I couldn't find something that matched my query, so I am starting a new thread. I have just noticed in my BOINC manager messages this baffling "GPU has become unsable" line. It surprises me because I don't know what changed. This is on a machine with a NVidia GeForce 9600GT TOP/2D Silent graphics card which was previously listed as usable. Should I worry about my graphics card or does this have some particular meaning in the BOINC manager context? I attach hereunder the relevant messages: 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Starting BOINC client version 6.10.58 for windows_x86_64 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Processor: 2 AuthenticAMD AMD Phenom(tm) II X2 550 Processor [Family 16 Model 4 Stepping 2] 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Processor: 512.00 KB cache 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 htt pni cx16 syscall nx lm svm sse4a osvw ibs skinit wdt page1gb rdtscp 3dnowext 3dnow 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM OS: Microsoft Windows 7: Ultimate x64 Edition, (06.01.7600.00) 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Memory: 4.00 GB physical, 8.00 GB virtual 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Disk: 111.79 GB total, 79.87 GB free 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Local time is UTC +2 hours 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM No usable GPUs found 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Preferences: 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM max memory usage when active: 2457.11MB 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM max memory usage when idle: 3685.66MB 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM max disk usage: 10.00GB 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM don't use GPU while active 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Suspending computation - initial delay 1/24/2011 12:45:17 PM GPUs have become unusable; disabling tasks Knowledge is limited. Nothing changes unless you changed something... such as attaching to a project outside WCG.
----------------------------------------1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM No usable GPUs found 1/24/2011 12:45:17 PM GPUs have become unusable; disabling tasks Can't recall to have seen such a line before, but then WCG does not support GPU crunching, so it's unlikely to be posted here. To go forward in understanding, plz post all messages from the start, relevant or not, through where the tasks start computing such as the below for a complete picture: ... ... 41 23-01-2011 11:21 max upload rate: 196608 bytes/sec 42 23-01-2011 11:21 (to change preferences, visit the web site of an attached project, or select Preferences in the Manager) 43 23-01-2011 11:21 Not using a proxy 44 23-01-2011 11:21 Suspending computation - initial delay 45 World Community Grid 23-01-2011 11:21 Restarting task ts02_a047_pla005_1 using dddt2 version 617 46 World Community Grid 23-01-2011 11:21 Restarting task ts02_a047_pla008_1 using dddt2 version 617 47 World Community Grid 23-01-2011 11:21 Restarting task ts02_a253_pr89b1_0 using dddt2 version 617 48 World Community Grid 23-01-2011 11:21 Restarting task ts02_a253_pr89b0_1 using dddt2 version 617 edit: A quick google spits out several discussions such as this one http://www.free-dc.org/forum/showthread.php?21641-GPU-or-CPU... outdated GPU drivers, failed GPU could be causes. I have noticed these kind of message when connecting to Windows PCs through Remote Desktop for example. I don't know what is happening exactly, but it looks like Windows sees another display connected and then does some initialisation on the drivers or whatever.
The only thing that does help for me, is closing BOINC down completely and restart it from the "original session". Doing so from the Remote Desktop will not help. Unfortunatly most of the times the GPU task that was active at the point the GPU got disabled, will result in a computation error. |

Hi SekeRob,
----------------------------------------I haven't attached any other projects. I did think about it, yes, but that was a couple of weeks ago and I didn't do anything about it, on account that I saw all the discussions about burning out the graphics card. Regardless, here are all the messages: 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Starting BOINC client version 6.10.58 for windows_x86_64 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Libraries: libcurl/7.19.7 OpenSSL/0.9.8l zlib/1.2.3 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Data directory: J:\BOINC 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Running under account 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Processor: 2 AuthenticAMD AMD Phenom(tm) II X2 550 Processor [Family 16 Model 4 Stepping 2] 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Processor: 512.00 KB cache 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 htt pni cx16 syscall nx lm svm sse4a osvw ibs skinit wdt page1gb rdtscp 3dnowext 3dnow 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM OS: Microsoft Windows 7: Ultimate x64 Edition, (06.01.7600.00) 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Memory: 4.00 GB physical, 8.00 GB virtual 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Disk: 111.79 GB total, 79.87 GB free 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Local time is UTC +2 hours 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM No usable GPUs found 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM World Community Grid URL http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID 1437273; resource share 100 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM World Community Grid General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 10-Jan-2011 23:21:56) 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM World Community Grid Computer location: home 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM General prefs: using separate prefs for home 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Reading preferences override file 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Preferences: 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM max memory usage when active: 2457.11MB 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM max memory usage when idle: 3685.66MB 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM max disk usage: 10.00GB 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM don't use GPU while active 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 50 % 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM (to change preferences, visit the web site of an attached project, or select Preferences in the Manager) 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Not using a proxy 1/24/2011 12:43:17 PM Suspending computation - initial delay 1/24/2011 12:45:17 PM GPUs have become unusable; disabling tasks 1/24/2011 12:45:17 PM World Community Grid Restarting task X0000060480208200511021058_1 using hcc1 version 608 1/24/2011 12:45:17 PM World Community Grid Restarting task E201067_061_A.29.C23H14N4O2.2.2.set1d06_1 using cep2 version 635 1/24/2011 1:01:55 PM GPUs have become usable; enabling tasks 1/24/2011 1:21:12 PM GPUs have become unusable; disabling tasks 1/24/2011 1:22:12 PM GPUs have become usable; enabling tasks 1/24/2011 1:31:52 PM GPUs have become unusable; disabling tasks 1/24/2011 1:34:54 PM GPUs have become usable; enabling tasks 1/24/2011 1:53:25 PM GPUs have become unusable; disabling tasks OK, this is getting freaky now... Read on about the Remote Desktop edit2 in my post and the next one by mpcsmith.
----------------------------------------edit: Am using TightVNC and LogMeIn as Remote Desktop tools. I've explicitly disabled GPU crunching in the cc_config.xml by inserting <cc_config> <options> <no_gpus>1</no_gpus> </options> </cc_config> See Start Here FAQs for instructions on the cc_config.xml if you wish to do this. Thanks to you both! Now I can breathe again.
---------------------------------------- @mpcsmits: luckily, I wasn't actually using my GPU for computing, so I haven't lost any actual work, I was mostly worried about my graphics card. @SekeRob: I think I should disable that GPU, after all, I'm not using it, nor plan on using it any time soon, so...But I don't think I need to go into the XML config file. There's also an option in the advanced view of the manager, under the Activity menu. Thanks again! Cheers! ![]() Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world! - Albert Einstein ![]() |

The option only appears I suspect when the GPU is not explicitly disabled in the config... at least it's not showing in mine. The Activity Menu basically just suspends GPU operations, but the client is still detecting it and spending cycles on managing. There's a few fixes on that in the next client. At any rate, am curious if the "unusable" message goes away if the activity option has been set to suspend for the GPU.
----------------------------------------@mpcsmith, thanks for pitching in your hands-on experience. Happy Crunshing [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 24, 2011 1:23:15 PM] |

The option only appears when you have a GPU that can be used by BOINC for processing. I have two such machines (my home PC and personal laptop), but the third one is not compatible for that (my work laptop) and that's where I miss the options for the GPU.
----------------------------------------I am yet to test if I logon remotely, do I still get the message. I will keep you posted. Cheers! Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world! - Albert Einstein ![]() |
