smile 100 Years and new badge

After the last surprise stats (timing was unusual) update I passed the 100 years runtime milestone. smile smile smile
That makes me pretty old. But computers are fast so 100 computer years have been for me equivalent of two real years.
Since the 50 years runtime milestone I choose the Diamond badge. Now for 100 years I had to find another one. Not an easy task. I finally decided to opt for a Tahiti golden pearl.

The large diameter, perfectly round and golden regular coloured pearls of the pacific, can be very valuable and expensive. On the other hand they are also fragile. I thought that would be a perfect candidate. SO I added it in my signature to replace the previous badge.

And now it is time to crunch for the next milestone 150 years. biggrin

Hypernova, congrats to you.
It's amazing the kinds of milestones we have achieved, are achieving, and will achieve here.

Hypernova, you are currently doing 1 CPU year worth of crunching about every 2.5 days. This means that you can reach the 200 year mark in roughly 8 or 9 months. Or we can go ahead and say another year, that way you get the summer off. smile

You a right anhhai. Summer is a terrible period for crunching. As I refuse to consume electrical energy for cooling the room I have to switch off some machines. But I am studying a way to extract the hot air from my small basement room to the outside through the unique window I have. The extraction fo hot air would suck in fresh air if the door of the room is closed. It should be doable with an electric motor that would not consume more that a few hundred watts, instead of many kilowatts to cool the air. There are in that small room at the moment 15 machines running.

Hypernova, time to go to 1000Y :)

It would be marvellous indeed rilian. smile Frankly I have difficulties to plan for such a milestone. This would mean at least ten years at the present rate. Should be less with the evolving technology as it comes. But who can plan so long in todays fast changing world. In 2020, will WCG be still there? Will I be still crunching? Will I have the financial power to continue, etc. etc.
A lot of open questions when one must plan for such a long period.
I prefer to plan by steps of 50 years which seems more reasonable. So next targets are 150 years for runtime, 150 million for points and 300'000 for results and as for ranking enter in first 50 club. As you see enough work for this year. peace

Indeed, CPU speeds double every 18months roughly, but runtime is really down to the core/thread count. So will the core/thread count double every 18months? I'm guessing not quite that fast, perhaps every 2.5years, because this would in itself increase the CPU rates, and there are other ways to increase CPU performance and comply with Moore's Law. Taking cumulative performance into account, in 5years time, you would roughly be getting around 2.7 times your present runtime, assuming regular system updates and the same input in terms of cost.

Slightly o/t but this graph shows the impact of Moore's Law on Science,

It sort of answers some of the other "will we be crunching?" questions. It's inevitable that Science will increasing use Computer Technology. Even if the WCG is no longer backed by IBM, and most of us are no longer crunching, others will be.

Re: 100 Years and new badge

Congrats my friend.
We'll find the answers and these new machines will cut the timeframe to do so.

Re: 100 Years and new badge

Yes Congrats!

At current rate, should take me about 4 years to acquire a pearl :)

Jack I put one of my most beautiful pearls aside for you.
With the technological speed up you may get it in less time than you think. wink
