I want to buy a used computer for just the purpose of running World Community Grid. I am wandering if there is a way to strip down Linux or Windows so that any or all unnecessary CPU computations are removed. For example, Windows always runs and Idle time process that takes many computing cycles. You get my idea, just use the cpu for computing World Community Grid. Let me know if this has being asked before so I can read the answers.
Thanks |

Dotsch/UX is a Linux distribution for BOINC which easily installs and boot from a USB stick, hard disk and from diskless clients and also has some interfaces to setup the diskless server and the clients automatically.
----------------------------------------For more informations have a look at Dotsch/UX There are also posts here from other users. Paul.

I don't know of any guide specific to WCG.
----------------------------------------For windows, there are many sites explaining which services do what and which can be safely disabled. If you want to remove bloat for Vista or XP, search for "nlite" and for windows 7, search for "rt7lite". I haven't used rt7lite, but nlite will allow you to remove unnecessary components as well as slipstreaming service packs and drivers. For linux, I usually just install the default and then run top to see what's running. If I don't need what's running, I disable it (cups/printing for example). I also use runlevel 3 since I don't run GPU projects on linux don't need a GUI and it's associated overhead. |

I want to buy a used computer for just the purpose of running World Community Grid. I would be more concerned about the computer and the operating system than trying to optimize. Basically the more CPU cores/threads the better, and Linux is generally faster. If you have more than one system in mind, post the specs up and someone will offer advice. Generally it's worth getting a power efficient system and some CPUs are much more efficient than others. |

After over 3 months of experience with AMD Phenom II x6, I really like to recommend this CPU. The overall price/performance ratio is pretty good. Currently, I operate one host with WinXP Pro SP3 and the second hosts with Ubuntu 10.04 Server edition. The both hosts work reliable and they do not produce too much heat (i.e. they do not use to much energy).
----------------------------------------Until Autumn 2010, my hosts were only Intel based (P4, Q6600, Q9450, Xeon 5345 and some old laptops with Pentium M). Cheers, Yves |

Just be warned that there are certain projects that should not be run on USB drives. If you're planning to run a HDD than you can run any projects.
