Re: WIFI / Wireless problems thread

No one has a problem or a fix to share it appears, but if WIFI starts acting up out of nowhere and it seeming to break off or reconnect ever more frequently AND you have a wireless keyboard or mouse too... time to replace the batteries. It sure stabilized things on my Linux box.

edit: Rechargeable they are of course ;D

Re: WIFI / Wireless problems thread

Want to get a real snazzy WIFI monitoring and analysis tool, then get ahold of DMT DSL-Modem Tool (German site **, but it has an English interface if you select that). There are different versions around tuned to particular ADSL router families. Using v. 8.07 which is able to decipher all from my 2740B D-Link router.

Linux Wifi, without cronjob now and self-reconnecting state since last boot some 5 days and counting. Did add the router MAC into the BBSID field. This way if the device will only connect or seek to connect to that router... faster and less interference from those G routers at foot of hill.

As yet not found an comparable for Linux. WICD Radar maybe though using it in past it seemed to cause more connection problems than it was solving.

Re: WIFI / Wireless problems thread

Still on getting to have WiFi to go up and "remain" up, set a new crontab job on Linux that issues a 1 time ping to the router every minute [keep alive procedure] **, stumbled on the [new to me] term "WPA-Supplicant". Well WPA2-PSK (AES) we know from the encryption key, mine using the 256 bit version. Some will also in past have observed, me many times, that the WiFi link is making connection and not able to complete the final handshake, then bombing, reconnection often only achievable by pulling/reseating the USB plug to reinitialize. At any rate, many roads leading to Rome, Google spat out a pile of reading material on starting/restarting/keep going of the WPA-Supplicant, a script being offered by someone who's handle looked familiar:

The Google hits:

http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+wpa+supplicant

Hope something is in there that points to the find of another Grail. If you do, let us know

** See the "I Confez" thread

PS, now the DHCP lease is set to 12 hours and 16 hours on checking into the router D-Link webpage, they Wifi links are indeed nicely refreshing without a hitch. Overall the scheduled ping ''feels'' like causing the whole WLan to be much more responsive.

edit: A good explanatory read of what WPA_supplicant does and can do, on many OS platforms, Linux and Windows.

Slow broadband? Blame the neighbours' Wi-Fi

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/broadband/365857/...lame-the-neighbours-wi-fi

Long time ago did manually choose a channel, but when checking in yesterday saw it was back to "auto", so applied again. The range is 1-9.
