Currently, I have two home computers running WCG with the standard device manager profile associated for both. The faster of the two uses an AMD X2 4000+. I expect to purchase a new computer sometime during 2011 and give the Dell Zino HD to my mother who has an old Compaq with an Intel Celeron processor that is breaking down.
I was initially planning to buy the newer Zino HD as a replacement, however, I might be persuaded to buy something with the new Sandy Bridge processors. They would primarily be used for WCG, but justified for the rare computer game I'd like to play. The X2 4000+ takes an average of 8-11 hours to complete a WU. If an i3/5/7 significantly speeds up the time taken to complete a WU, I may justify that to purchase a computer with one of those. Thanks for the help. |

Since you're an AMD fan, you might want to watch for the new chips they are supposed to be bringing out this year.

I wouldn't necessarily say I'm an AMD fan. Just bought manufactured computers that fit my needs and price at the time. I'm probably leaning towards buying an i3 Sandy Bridge when they are released from Dell and buy a video card at a later date to play Elder Scrolls 5 when it's released.
As much as I'd like to buy an i7, it really depends on the performance with WCG. Is there any benchmarks with different processors on WCG that can be linked? |

The i7 would do at least twice the work of an i3.

It's hard to get accurate statistics, but my recent i3 540 (pre-Sandy) seems to be getting ~6-8k points per day, while my i7 920 (LGA 1366) gets ~18-20k points per day. I'd say that the i7 920 can do at least 2.5 to 3 times the work.
Although it tends to take about a week before the "device statistics" numbers stabilize, and I've only been running the i3 for a couple of days, so it may trend higher yet. I haven't seen WCG results for Sandy Bridge, but according to a benchmark like POV-ray (mostly numeric calculations and scales well with the number of cores, presumably similar to WCG tasks) the Sandy Bridge i7-2600 is 20-30% faster than the i7 920. |

I'd buy the faster processor you can and overclock it. The Intel and AMD websites have all the specs you need.
