Client emergency-deadline scheduling question

This is a why-is-it-doing-that question on Boinc client 6.10.58 (on xp)

Currently I am running only WCG, and only DDDT-2 on this host. Due to estimate adjustments it got itself solidly into high-priority-mode territory.
No question there.

What's bugging me is that the client is consistently keeping 5-6 tasks active on a 4-core box. 1-2 tasks will have anywhere from 1 1/2 - 5 cpu hours on them -- my switch time is 2 hrs -- but are waiting to run, while 4 other tasks are running. Everything is high priority, and given the workload and deadlines I can't prove but don't believe it is ever leaving that mode.

I haven't seen an obvious pattern in terms of deadlines or FIFO, and don't understand why it's jumping from one incomplete task to another in these circs.

The result is that the high memory/vm load of DDDT-2 work is exacerbated by having 6 tasks chew up vm instead of 4.

"Why is it doing that?"

any clues appreciated.

the answer to your question is in your post "Due to estimate adjustments it got itself solidly into high-priority-mode territory"

when you have cache so high that it is near the deadline of you WUs this has been known to happen. The solution is to lower your cache. Temporary solution is to just suspend a bunch of your WUs, this will remove you from the high-priority mode.

Re: Client emergency-deadline scheduling question

my switch time is 2 hrs
(Boinc is set to switch applications every 2h). Try making this longer than the longest task, that way it will not switch before the task finishes; 900h for example.
