Old BOINC version in Ubuntu Main Repository

Hello Fellow Crunchers cool

I've installed BOINC from the UBUNTU Main repository using their Package manager; the version that was installed was 6.10.17.

When I fired up BOINC, it advised me of a newer version (6.10.58) in the Messages panel but this version is not in the UBUNTU Main repository. I know that it can be downloaded at WCG but it does not install automatically like software in the package manager (it's in the form of a .sh script) and it does not overwrite the older version; it installs in the Home folder thus leaving the old version in /usr/bin. I'm very new to Linux so I don't feel confident enough to try overwriting program modules or moving stuff around, etc.

Version 6/10.17 seems to be running fine on my laptop. My question is should we be running the latest BOINC version for WCG or is it okay to run an older version?

Best regards, Nick

Re: Old BOINC version in Ubuntu Main Repository

Hi Nick, and welcome to WCG!

It is absolutely fine to run WCG under BOINC version 6.10.17. Also, installing from the Ubuntu repository is the easiest way for a Ubuntu user to set up so that BOINC automatically starts up when you turn the machine on and shuts down when you turn it off. So you're in good shape.

By the way, the repository for Ubuntu 10.10 does have BOINC 6.10.58. There are instructions on another thread (I'll hunt for it when I have time and will add the link to this message) on how to access the repository for Ubuntu 10.10 and upgrade to BOINC 6.10.58 when you're running Ubuntu 10.04. If you ever upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10, the upgrade to BOINC 6.10.58 should happen automatically.

I am running WCG under BOINC 6.10.17 on 3 Linux computers and have no trouble with it whatsoever.
