A few weeks ago I updated my BOINC Manager to the latest version 6.10.58.
I can't say the direct cause and result relationship, but I've noticed that this particular machine (Dell D830 WinXP) is not performing for WCG as it used to. I often see the tasks are suspended due to CPU usage during my workday. I don't think the other versions were so eager to suspend calculations. So I began looking more closely at the Messages listing to see what else I could determine. It appears that my machine is quite overloaded in the middle of the night! example: 12/3/2010 12:01:07 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 12:02:37 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 12:02:48 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 8:25:28 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:25:59 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 8:27:29 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:28:09 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 8:28:19 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:28:29 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 8:31:40 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:33:00 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 8:33:20 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:34:40 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 8:38:50 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:39:01 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 8:40:51 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:41:01 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 8:42:11 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:42:21 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 8:42:42 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:43:22 AM Running CPU benchmarks 12/3/2010 8:43:22 AM Suspending computation - running CPU benchmarks 12/3/2010 8:43:53 AM Benchmark results: 12/3/2010 8:43:53 AM Number of CPUs: 2 12/3/2010 8:43:53 AM 2108 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU 12/3/2010 8:43:53 AM 4485 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU 12/3/2010 8:47:52 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:48:12 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 8:49:42 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:50:53 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 8:51:53 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:52:23 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 8:53:03 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:53:43 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 8:54:04 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:54:24 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high 12/3/2010 8:54:54 AM Resuming computation 12/3/2010 8:55:44 AM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high Notice that more than 8 hours are lost after midnight! Also, computation is suspended every few minutes beginning at 8:25am! I didn't start to work with the machine until 9am today, so I don't know what kicked it into gear at 8:25 and I don't know why it suspends calculation every few minutes for the rest of the day! In my Scheduled Tasks folder, I found that insipid virus Google Updater starts to 'work' at midnight each night. I've just disabled those tasks. Hopefully the machine won't be bothered during the night by that again, but I don't understand why my fairly lightly used Dell is reportedly so taxed that the WCG computations must be suspended. This machine is used for light office work and some internet. What settings can I look at to ensure that the computations are not interrupted as easily as they seem to be now? |

Robotic, the new version of boinc has a new check that says if non-boinc apps are using the more then 25% of the CPU, then boinc will be suspened. You can either go and change the 25% to something higher like 80% (done in the profiles on the web or under Advanced->perferences on boinc) or you can just set boinc to "run always"

Ah! THANK YOU
I'd been in that setting panel before, but for some reason the meaning of that particular field never sunk in. Great! Happiness ensues! |
