sad "Small Teams Race"

I like signing my team up for the "Small Teams Race" for whatever month it is. In this case December. And what bothers me is that a lot of the teams are not small at all. In fact, the top two teams happen to also be in the top 50 teams with the MOST members(900+ members). It is not nice that they join the small teams race to destroy little 2 person teams like mine... sad Make your own gigantor teams race!!! please.

Re: "Small Teams Race"

here are the list of the top 10 teams in the race along with how many members they have and ranking in team size.

Czech National Team 985 (#32)
Team China 1,654 (#20)
Ukraine 543 (#56)
RedRaider Technology 121 (#247)
Team Andrax 66 (#445) <=my team
UDGermany 35 (#794)
AMD Users 474 (#62)
UK 398 (#75)
Vulture Central III 96 (#304)
SETI@Netherlands 122 (#247)

I do not know what the definition of "small team" means, but a few of these teams are no way close to being small in my opinion. Others like "Team Andrax" and "UDGermany" are small teams for sure.

I can understand your view. It's part of the reason I haven't signed up MOT. Still, we're not really a huge team ourselves. Yes, we have 256 current members according to WCG. Truth is though, we only have around 40 returning results on a regular basis, almost 70 over the course of a year. So it's hard to get a fair picture of just how big a team really is with what info there is here on the website. Still, it would be nice to really be able to compare your team to other equal size teams. The way you set up a team challenge, you can't really restrict it by something like team size and leave it as an open challenge. It's not that the large teams are out to destroy the small teams. I think it's more of a case of captains who simply join whatever challenges there are out there. Still, you have a point and us captains should consider it.

Re: "Small Teams Race"

Hi gregrich91,

Here's a feature suggestion: Open, but with an active member/devices limit to be determined by the organizer. Develop the thought and put a proposal in the suggestions/feedback forum if you will.

For closed races, it's by invitation anyhow, so the captain determines who can sign up. When you know from the last 12 months who are in and outside the league, use the closed option to invite the teams... regrettably that leaves out anyone new to the challenge events, but by maintaining a Small Teams Challenges thread and monitoring requests for inclusion, you have an opportunity to add these to the next one.

Now I saw on BOINCstats that they're also running challenges that pick a project, so visiting there and see what options they have might give ideas what would be good additions to the WCG challenge feature set.

Loose thoughts... had in past one to have a specific "Challenges" forum but nothing came of that, though my thinking still is that it gives a home to the discussions and more emphasis and awareness. Nice feature at top of such a forum could be some sticky posts that link directly to upcoming and ongoing and completed challenges as the path seems to be a little long from the forum... 3 clicks at least.
