No New Workpackets Coming in / Many Old Workpackets Ready to Report

I've had several times when I've run my laptop into the night and then rather than shut it down let it run all night. When I come in the morning, I'll see a bunch of workpackets the laptop completed still sitting in Ready to Report status, but no new workpackets running.

This morning is one such example. Right now I have five workpackets in Ready to Report mode, but no current workpackets running at all.

I normally run four workpackets at a time since I have a quad core on my laptop and it seems to get the work done nicely while I'm doing other work at the same time without much trouble.

With all these workpackets now sitting in Ready to Report mode, will there be a time later today when I could expect worldcommunitygrid to come down and pick up all the reporting packets and start up new work? Or at this time am I to assume that something hung up on the reporting side and I need to force an update to clear things up?

I'm looking to bring in a number of new machines into a new office I'm setting up in another 30 days and would like to run the worldcommunitygrid work on all those new machines (all probably quad core laptops or desktops) under my user id, but I'm concerned that if a number of these machines are left to run 24 hours a day for several days to a week or more, that these new machines will get into the same state this laptop is in today and instead of things clearing on their own in ready manner, that a bunch of work will pile up on them and not clear through - I would like to be able to add my new computing power to the greater good and not hang up a bunch of work which just mucks up everything.

Any feedback on why this is happening and if there is anything I can change on my profile to keep the work flowing all the time through my machines would be appreciated.

rbotterb, it is perfectly normal for some WU (Work Units) to stay in the "ready to report" state for a few hours. Basically what happened was a combination of a few of your previous WU completed faster then normal and/or one of the "ready to report" WU took longer to finished then expected. This resulted in BOINC to re-adjust the estimated time for the remaining WUs to be completed, resulting BOINC thinking that you have enough WU to cover what you want in your cache.
Once the amount of time estimated to finish all of your remaining WU is less then what you set as your cache, then BOINC will report your WUs and ask for more at the same time.
Also, there is a 1 day limit of how long a WU will stay in "ready to report" state. So you are guaranteed to have your WUs reported within 24 hrs of it being done (assuming internet connectivity)

Thanks for the information on this topic anhhai.

I remember there being some automatic check-in once or more per day, but didn't realize that the BOINC was doing this other checking behind the scenes with the estimated time to complete. Kind of explains when I've seen more than one workpacket left in ready to report status for a few hours while less than four packets are running on my laptop - at least until another one completes and starts to clean up the ready to report backlog.

I'll just let it sit for awhile and see if the new work kicks in as expected - should kick in any time now today.

Just checked again and 30 minutes ago all the ready to report packets were picked up and a new set of four workpackets are crunching along on my laptop.

quick question,
while the WUs were marked as "ready to report" you still did have other WUs that were crunching, right? If not then there is some other problem. What is your cache size? (look under Advance->peferences->network usage. the buffer sizes)
