I am a newb to WCG, still finding my feet here, so I did not post this on the thread concerned to avoid possible confusion.
Example Cross Project ID issue In that thread the cruncher had an issue resulting from updating the cpu. Whats happened is BOINC has picked up the hardware change and generated a new machine ID. The hardware is associated with BOINC crunchers ultimately via the Cross Project ID system. That can both be a godsend, and a curse depending on the issue. This case a godsend, if access to normal BOINC Project software exists. In the standard BOINC Project Software, there is a page showing all the machines owned by a cruncher, and those not active for 30 days or more. There it will also show the new machine as created for this example above. There is also an option to "merge computers by name". That function is very useful for tidying up the results of these changes, simplifying the machine details and credit details for the cruncher. By clicking that option, the software checks out the duplicate machines created by new hardware or OS upgrades, and merges the credit awards and machines duplicated into one record for the actual machine. Usually within a day or two the Stats sites pick up the merge and reality is shown once more. Quick and simple, all back to normal, no fuss or bother. It would be useful to have access to that function within the WCG Project Pages. I dont know how difficult/easy it will be to import the relevant code, these things always have hidden gotcha's in reality, but its worth the effort to do so, as its a very worthwhile facility for the cruncher. Hello Zydor,
Rather difficult for our non-standard hacked BOINC code, I'm afraid. We started out running UD grid software, which absolutely forbade this sort of merge. After a year, we decided to switch to BOINC and hacked BOINC so we could run it in tandem with UD. After a couple of years we eliminated UD altogether, but we have been too busy on new projects to migrate to standard BOINC server software. And don't even think of implementing merge as a special function. It caused trouble for months after BOINC rolled it out till they finally eliminated the bugs. To save time, we will eventually migrate to the BOINC standard. We will not try to duplicate it piece-meal. Lawrence |

Understood - its a good facility, but not that good that its worth going through that level of grief to get it. It'll come along with the final server migration whenever its practical for you to do that.
