No downloads for days............
I did not get any new work units for days now. Even after several update requests there is no downloading at all.

Okay, as there is plenty of WU's downloading for other users (myself included), there must be something the matter at your end.

Could you please restart BOINC and post all the messages you see in the Messages Tab (which you might have to switch to Advance View to see) right up to and including all/any error messages you see - then hopefully (not me, as I'm just about to go to bed), someone will be able to help you.

I'm not familiar with how much of the CPU Collatz uses but with three tasks running it might be useing all the available CPU cycles.

Try pausing one or two of your Collatz tasks and see if that helps.

Also with your prefs set to "suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25 %" if you are doing anything CPU intensive with your computer Boinc will stop.

Also you might try increasing WCG resource share up from the current 100 to 200 or maybe 300...

Hi,

Your log indicates that the client has:

1. No room in cache to backfill more work of any project
2. Does not have any scheduling debt towards WCG.

To check the WCG work fetch status go to Project tab, select WCG and hit the properties button. In the scheduling section, negative numbers indicate debt, positive numbers indicate that crunching time is starting to be scheduled and soon as space is available in cache, work will be fetched.

The work shares also indicate that WCG only gets 1/4 of the total computing time.

And a NB: You have the default setting ofg this client version on:

2010/11/11 09:03:45 suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25 %

Even the slightest user activity can cause the client to pause and unload the sciences to restart from last checkpoint when the user load drops again below 25%. Of course if the activity menu is set to "Run Always", this option is not active.

I am a WCG newbie - but not so for BOINC Projects, so slight health warning as I am not yet used to WCG. However ...

Couple of things I noted from the log file you posted.

You have three Collatz tasks running, two are Version 2.00, and one is Version 2.03.

V2.00 is the Collatz WU for Intel x86 CPU, so at present both cores on your machine are crunching another project. V2.03 is a GPU WU. Therefore at present both the CPU cores and GPU are fully committed. You also have your preferences set in terms of Priority as Collatz 200, WCG 100, SETI 100. The machine will therefore give initial preference for Collatz WUs, although over time it will balance out Projects to the proportions you have set.

The machine will have downloaded certainly Collatz to the max level of cache you specified in the BAM Client preferences. If the total number of Collatz WUs times its claimed crunch time per WU exceeds the cache level set, it will refuse to download any more of any project. Its likely at present that as a WU from collatz finishes, its downloading a replacement, so at present does not get around to downloading a WCG WU.

To force some WCG WUs, I suggest you set Collatz to "no more work" manually, and run down the number held. That will create space in the cache setting to download WCG WUs. When that space is created, do a manual update of WCG, and it should download some. You might have to suspend the Collatz & SETI projects to either download some WCG WUs and/or get one running. Doing this manually will get in the way of BOINC automatically balancing out proportions you set to be crunched, choice is yours.

Just remember that once down the manual road you'll need to manage the held WUs for the CPU yourself including updating (none of this will affect the Collatz GPU WUs, they will happily crunch away during all this with no intervention needed). You can partially get round that by suspending all projects less the one you want for the moment (presumably WCG). Also remember that doing this will stop downloaded Collatz WUs crunching and may miss their deadlines - if thats likely its good practice to abort some to prevent someone else hanging around for your WU to validate against.

Finally, suggest you check preferences - processor useage tab, currently its set for 25. That means if the non BOINC work exceeds 25% of CPU, stop all BOINC crunching. For most people thats a real pain. Setting it to zero will give unrestricted use (BOINC backs off anyway if another non-BOINC task needs resource, and for most people that 25% default setting is more trouble than its worth.

Hope that helps you, sorry its a bit long, its the old story the suggestions are simple enough, describing them is a bit wordy by necessity.

Hi Zy,

No worries. Welcome to the WCG forums and good informative post. Learned something new on Collatz behavior (don't crunch that myself), some projects, particular with short deadlines and GPU that use substantial CPU time on the side, seem to monopolize clients until they're deep in debt. Personally, given WCG is an 8 sub-projects grid and Collatz 1 or 2, a weight change aka resource share adjustment will automate more time going towards WCG. Mine is set to 500 taking the multi-disciplinary 8 sciences of WCG into account. Avoids having to manage manually and later again see one or the other project going into seeming hibernation for longer.

For screamer, to extend on the 25% non-BOINC setting, to avoid the unloading suggest to select in the web or local preferences the "Leave Application in Memory when Suspended". Zero indeed disables this option if the "Run based on preferences" activity menu option is selected. WCG default for new members is 50%, but that's only on the website. The local prefs once stored override website prefs.

Think there's enough to read now to have heads spinning for starters.

I do have a similar problem.
I use a 4 core CPU and the PC is currently not used for other purposes. Thus it should be crunching tasks all the time.

But for some reason it does only 4 or 8 and than needs to be manually triggered to fetch new jobs. It does not even seem to triy an get new jobs.

What makes me wonder is that in the properties for WCG is states that:

NVIDIA GPU scheduling priority: 0.00

For CPU everything is fine.

Could it be, tht the GPU is somehow in sleepmode due to the fact, that the monitor is switched off?

The GPU is not used to crunch WCG tasks.

You might want to check your Boinc settings; network usage selections including cache (additional work buffer).

hi holterblitz,

plz set your additional buffer in the local preferences to 2.0 days. What happens then is that the client is forced to connect by itself if completed results signified by "Ready to Report" are getting older than 24 hours. Of course that is if your internet connection is on. The Activity menu setting to network is best set to "Network [activity] always available". In the local preferences there's also "Confirm before connection to internet". The box has to be UNticked!

If it does not start connecting and reporting results on its own, make sure to next time you post to include the start up portion of the message log (30 lines or so), so we can see what the system setup is. The log starts with...

edit: Plz add to the requesting information a copy from the client_state.xml which is found in the BOINC data_directory. Path is printed in the start_up section of the message log, see above. Folder could be hidden, so you might have to type the path. What I'd like to see is this part:
