Too expensive to keep crunching

I finally did the math on how much the extra CPU activity is costing me to leave WCG running, and as a result I'm retiring. I discovered that my system's power consumption skyrockets by 100 Watts when WCG is running, meaning its monthly usage jumps from 122 kWh to 195 kWh, a difference of 73 kWh. That's enough to guarantee that I always have a "tier 2" charge. It's been adding about $13 a month to my bill. I don't dare even sit down and calculate how much I've spent on extra electricity since the days of SETI@Home. If only money wasn't an issue....

Re: Too expensive to keep crunching

How about throttling it back and crunch at say 50% CPU? Or set BOINC to only run at certain hours of day/night.

I can certainly understand about watching the electric usage. I was very careful when I put together my home computers to use low wattage components and generate as less heat as possible. I'm not worried about winning any races.

Re: Too expensive to keep crunching

Then how about a machine that does app 7000-8000WCG PPD, takes app 85-90w from the wall at 100% load and never breaks down or bluescreens?
Did I also mention that it will run at 100% load at 34c? biggrin
Oh, and you can buy the motherboard, 2cpu's, the memory and the PSU for it for a grand total of $130.00 USD

If something like that interests you come over to the XtremeSystems forum, go to the WCG section and look for the Sossaman thread..

Re: Too expensive to keep crunching

Eh... $130 is most of what I'm trying to save. I'm well below the official poverty line right now, and food stamps can't buy computer parts even if I was okay with going hungry for the sake of more work units.

That is why we need CEP (clean energy project) to progress into real world technology to continue crunching. This should be our priority. Crunching cost would never go down.

We all understand that there is a bottom line under which one's priorities do change drastically. To be able to donate time and money to a cause you must first be in shape to do so.
Thank you to have still kept on with WCG even during some of the hard times you are going through.
All my best wishes to you for a brighter future. peace
And when your finances will allow it we will be very happy to have you back and crunching. smile

Re: Too expensive to keep crunching

Sad to hear that I really understand where you are coming from, the only reason I am here is I don't have to pay utilities and energy cost are low where i live.

I don't suppose you could build a wind turbine or something..:(

Re: Too expensive to keep crunching

I found the link:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthrea...43&highlight=sossaman

I found this definition from D A:

"The Sossaman is a low voltage Xeon dual core chip. While they are 32bit only, they are rock solid, reliable hardware use little power and are cheap to build a whole system with. There are specific parts that need to be used, but they're not expensive either. XS probably has the highest concentration of these things anywhere on WCG."

The whole thread is 83 pages, starting in Sept 2008 and it is full of tips, tricks, and prices.
