Hi all
I have searched and read FAQ's. How much of my internet usage would the software use if I ran it for 20 hours a day approx on 2 laptops? I am limited to 30GB usage a month from internet provider, so cannot go outside of this. Please let me know how much bandwidth this software uses please? Regards Luke |

Read here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/vi...?shortName=minimumreq#413
----------------------------------------and do the math but first complete a WU so you have a basis on how many it can do in 20 hours time frame ![]() ![]() |

Luke, WU = Work Unit. 200mb for clean energy is only a 1 time download. However, I wouldn't recommend you doing WU from clean energy if you worry about bandwidth, since the uploads are between 20MB and 80MB.
----------------------------------------Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together - Phase 2 also uses a lot of bandwidth. Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 has uses 1.6 MB per WU For all of the others, you shouldn't worry too much ![]() |

Also WU means tasks or results. Get used to the terms and lingo in these distributed computing/grid as there are a lot whc means only one thing.

To follow up on X-Files 27 post, there is a list of Acronyms used within WCG in the FAQ's, here -> WCG, BOINC & Other Acronyms and Mnemonics (2.0)

Hi all I have searched and read FAQ's. How much of my internet usage would the software use if I ran it for 20 hours a day approx on 2 laptops? I am limited to 30GB usage a month from internet provider, so cannot go outside of this. Please let me know how much bandwidth this software uses please? Regards Luke Hi Luke, What client version are you on? With 6.10.58 you can set a bandwidth limit per day / multi day (not yet addid in FAQs, BUT, there is a bandwidth topic ;-). The preference on the website can be found in the device profile > custom > network usage section: Transfer at most: xxx Mbytes every yy days This setting allows members to choose the max transfer allowed over a multiple day period. It is enforced by version 6.10.46+ of the BOINC agent. You do not say if the bandwidth limit is one way or the sum of both ways. If upload is separate of download I'd not worry about CEP2 (currently Linux only). Download is very big on DDDT2, for every single task so not recommended (work so far is very rare anyway). So to make a suggestion... suppose you want to keep 10GB to yourself for web browsing and allocate 20GB to WCG result transfer, you can set the option to 20000MB divided by 30 days divided by 2 equal computers = 333MB per 1 day. In the Activity menu of BOINC you'll have to select "Network based on preferences". What happens then is if a computer reaches the daily maximum it stops transmitting, but continues computing what it has in cache and will report that the next day. I think with 333MB you will get a very long way of being able to compute 24/7, unless you laptops are really fast and have 4 cores or more. Observe and tune as appropriate. Let us know

I would suggest that WCG on two laptops is not likely to use more than 3 or 4 GB a month.
----------------------------------------I rarely use more than 10GB (up-and-downloads) a month with regular use of You Tube, Google Earth etc, apart from crunching on two laptops and a quad.

Thanks for all the replies!
Turns out I had been over my 40gb limit this month by a further 30GB! :o Telephoned BT which is who Im with for phone and internet, and the next package up - which has unlimmited broadband usage is only a further £5 a month. They weived the £1 per GB charge for what Id used for upgrading, and didnt extend my contract to 18 months again, they just added it to remaining contract, so all in all a good day! So now not too worried about usage, can let it run quite happily, anything I use over 100GB a month slows my speeds... The usage was caused by iplayer, youtube, and PS3 played by family while Im quite happy at work *sigh* Thanks again everyone!! |
