RT, There was a reason why HCC was chosen as the prime target for GPUfication even before the scientists optimized the application and removed the external loops to make it run 2x faster on Windows and 4x faster from the old Linux version to the new Linux version. Another something I did not know...that HCC was chosen as the prime target for GPUfication. I wonder...is this expected any time in the forseeable future...the GPUfication I mean? |

Just to chime in with run times on Win7 64 vs Ubuntu 64.
----------------------------------------HCC is a lot faster, but HPF and HFCC both ran a not insignificant bit faster. I have no idea on integer usage of the various programs but I do know that under Linux there is less OS overhead running which lets the crunching programs run with a few more % of CPU than on windows. That's what me watching the task managers of the 2 has told me at least, lol. ![]() |

The runtime differences you are seeing is correct and that is due to compiler differences between the two operating systems. Thanks uplinger for this clear answer. Compiler difference makes sense. Code produced is more performant or efficient under Linux than under Windows. It gives a picture of Windows as Fat and Slow, against Linux Lean and Fast. ![]() |

Here's my experience on the performance diffs between systems: ONLY LINUX 64-bit is twice as fast on HCC; Linux 32-bit, win 32 and 64 are just about the same speed. OSes running under VMware are very slightly slower.
----------------------------------------My most bizarre rig is as follows: WinXP 32-bit hosting a Linux Ubuntu AMD64 (64-bit) guest ! Many told me I was asking for trouble hosting a 64-bit os on a 32-bit one. As we speak, it's running at full speed, crunching at more than twice the win32 speed... Celeron e3300 @3.65Ghz, 2Gb mem: 3500 fp, 19250 Integer. 45minutes/units vs 95min on win32 The CPU is indeed working harder. Temperature has risen from 52 to 55c once I ran Boinc from the win32 to the hosted Linux64... ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by bicotz at Oct 31, 2010 3:09:47 AM] |
