I have four computers and my laptop has stopped executing two WUs at the same time. I have checked the other computers, and the number of WUs being executed is equal to the number of cores for each computer. I have run PC-Doctor 5 for Windows and the information provided says there are 2 logical CPUs. I have also increased the Additional work buffer size to 2 days to make sure I do not have a problem downloading additional WUs, and the processing performs as it should. Before taking the computer to our service center, I want to find out if anyone knows what I may have done to cause the problem or what may have occurred with BOINC processing. I have read that a change was being made to allow only one type of WU to run on a PC, but that was related to processing for CEP2. Does anyone have any suggestions? |

Hello dkt,
Just in case, check your boot messages in BOINC Messages to make sure that your laptop is not running on local preferences, overriding the web site preferences. If you are, then clear the local preferences and update from your web site preferences. Lawrence |

Hi Lawrence,
I had been running with two WUs for quite some time, and as far as I know, I did nothing to explicitly set the number of processors to one. Going through BOINC home I found "BOINC indicates 2 CPUs, but I only have 1" and this is the closest I was able to get to my problem. There were several suggestions made one of which was "Or set BOINC for the project you are crunching to use 1 CPU. You can do that through Your Account, General Preferences, change the option On multiprocessors, use at most to 1 processor, save the changes to the preferences page, and then update that project through BOINC (Open Boinc Manager, Projects tab, select the project, hit Update)." I don't think this would apply when trying to get BOINC to us 2 processors. How does BOINC determine the number of processors to use? PC-Doctor had no problem determining I have 2 logical CPUs. Hi Dave,
----------------------------------------The line 10/25/2010 3:36:08 PM||Reading preferences override file indicates that you're currently using the BOINC settings on your local computer, so firstly, I'd go and clear those out (from Advanced view, go into the Advanced dropdown menu option, select Preferences, and then press the Clear button). This will then ensure that you've only 1 place to look/concentrate on (i.e., the WCG Device Profiles settings - which, may solve the issue). If not, then from within the Device Profiles setting, check the "On multiprocessors, use: % of processors " line - and if it's not stating 100%, make it so. Hopefully, either of these suggestions will cure your issue. ![]() |

Hi dkt,
Back from supper. You must clear your local preferences on the laptop and then change the web site preferences to use more than 1 core on multi-processors. Lawrence |

"BOINC indicates 2 CPUs, but I only have 1" I suppose that you have a processor with two cores. That would appear as two CPU in Boinc. Check that you have 100% set on the Multiprocessor use parameter in boinc as mentioned by gb009761. Did you install a more recent version of Boinc, ex. the latest version available on the WCG website, and if so did the change happen after that upgrade? ![]() |

Hi all,
I do not know how it happened, but my local preferences were set to say "On multiprocessor systems, use at most 90 % of the processors" and I changed this to 100 % to verify what ab said. I am now running with both processors. I may have accidentally changed the number of processors to 90% when I was trying to reduce the amount of heat to see if it would affect another problem I am having with my keyboard lock out not working, Thanks for all the help. I will need to check the other systems to make sure they are correct. |
