Keep getting "backing off X hours" and "temporary failed download" error messages

This started occuring after the server update some 2 days ago

During the update, I got a message saying the "project is down for maintanance" or something. Fair enough. However, after the update, nothing is working for me.

I keep getting messages like:
"Backing off X hours of task XXX"
"Temporary failed download of task XXX"
"[error] reported by file upload server: Can't open file."

If I press "reset project", sometimes I am lucky enough to download new tasks. However, as soon as the tasks are completed, they do not upload to the server. They just stand there saying "Ready to report".

And if I restart my BOINC manager or computer, all completed tasks are deleted. So it's a waste of CPU power right now.

Saw this same in another thread, then a later post in same to say that you are receiving tasks that complete. SOME (not many) new tasks were corrupted in storage as a result of the big crash last week Wednesday/Thursday, so they fail downloading when the client finds they do not checksum. Go to the Transfer tab in the client, select the failing download and abort. Then if not clearing from the Tasks view, select these tasks there and abort them and the line will be disappear to get good tasks.

Yes, Ready to Report can sit there for up to 24 hours. before acknowledging. Nothing is being wasted... the output you can see on the My Grid > Result Status page.

I tried the "Abort Transfer" option as you said, and indeed the failing download was removed.

However, it still worries me that the tasks saying "Ready to report" seem to dissappear after I restart BOINC.

Re: Keep getting "backing off X hours" and "temporary failed download" error messages

Have you actually visited the Result Status page to check out what these tasks ended up with?

Think that the client after a boot goes to connect to the WCG server and then it's first action being to send the phase 2 Ready To Report part of a completed task. Again, if you compare the Result Status page "Return Time" and match to your client message log and boot time, you'll find all is OK.

NB: All times on the RS pages are in UTC time!

Thanks for the tip to abort a hung-up task, Sekerob. I came home from vacation to see a hung task and a completely empty task queue, but am now watching the scheduler pull down a whole bunch of C4CW.

I noticed that my cpu usage was nill. Checked and I was stuck also. Followed abort tip and all is well again.

Re: Keep getting "backing off X hours" and "temporary failed download" error messages

There's a configuration trick that sets more concurrent upload/downloads. I have this on 3 per project, so the stuck in download Beta I have had in for the past 12 hours did not hold up new work downloads, albeit, those ran one by one rather than default 2 simultaneous.

There's a downside to that setting. The concurrent 3 does spread the bandwidth and thus a client could walk into the "not enough speed" rating for current CEP2 minima, but as yet they're still coming.

edit: strike "in" replaced with "for"
