October 2010 Research Update

Dear World Community Grid members,

We have a new progress report on the HCC project web site. We have lately enhanced our automatic image classifier by simultaneously considering multiple images from the same crystallization trial:

These images were taken one week apart during a single crystallization trial. The state of the trial changes from precipitate at week 0 (left), through mixed precipitate and crystal at week 1, to crystal at weeks 2, 3, and 4. By evaluating multiple images in the same time course, a more consistent classification is obtained. We are also studying the effect of expanding the context of the image in other dimensions.

Thank you for your continued donations of CPU time and enthusiasm to this project and others on the World Community Grid. Your contributions make this research possible.

Re: October 2010 Research Update

Thanks for the update.

One query: Last in June some 30 million units were added. The report now mentions 20 million, the library having expanded to some 115 million total, see http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ead,29243_offset,0#283792. Was there a cleanup?

Based on the Aug.26 reference when we hit 99.5 million (quorum 2 + repairs) I calculate that we've now advanced to about 54.5%.

cheers

confused Re: October 2010 Research Update

So, are the results of this volunteer effort going to be Publicly released upon completion of the project?

... I just replied to the previous statement on the previous Cancer project, in which it was stated that the results would 'not be publicly released'.

If we are all going to dedicate time to this project, I believe that we should be provided with some form of written guarantee that the results are not going to be kept private, and sold to the highest-bidding 'Big Pharama' corporation.

Forgive my cynicism, but this all seems like a big 'free research' opportunity for the pharmaceuticals, and 'free money' for the research teams that can sell their results to the highest bidder.

Re: October 2010 Research Update

One (of the many) criteria for projects running on WCG, is that all the results will be in the public domain - thus, the raw data will be publicly available.

not talking

Ignore a!!!. He posted insults on a thread that had a June 2009 post saying that the HDC results database was not online yet. Sekerob answered that the database was online now in 2010. You can follow this here:
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ead,25869_offset,0#303003

Nine minutes after Sekerob posted his reply, a!!! made this post.

love struck This is what is called a drive-by post.
