wrong parameter - cpu uilization

Greetings!
Apparently there is a problem between the device manager and the boinc manager preferences. The wrong parameter is used for ___% processor utilization.

The WCG device manager provides several values for CPU utilization:
a) (Basic Option) Use no more than ___ % of processor time.
b) (Advanced Options) (Processor Usage) On multi-CPU processors,
use ____% processors
c) (Advanced Options) (Graphics)
When displaying graphics, use at most _____% of cpu

The BOINC Manager Preferences - processor Usage shows two parameters related to CPU utilization on the processor Usage tab
a) On multi-CPU processors, use at most ____% of the processors.
b) Use at most _____ % CPU time

PROBLEM:
The value set for % GRAPHICS utilization
is showing up as the BOINC value for
On multi-CPU processors, use ____% processors

My environment:
OS: Linux: 2.6.26-2-686
BOINC client version 6.2.14 for i686-pc-linux-gnu

THANKS IN ADVANCE,
Jay

Re: wrong parameter - cpu uilization

Interesting as that value can only be controlled from the website (CPU use for graphics) and is stored in a different file than the web and local prefs, namely the account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml file in the values

<max_frames_sec>3</max_frames_sec>
<max_gfx_cpu_pct>4.0</max_gfx_cpu_pct>

6.2.14 is kind of aged, I think for a long time not the recommended Linux version. Suggest upgrading to 6.10.17 or 6.10.58

Re: wrong parameter - cpu uilization

Thanks Rob!

I had instaled the default version from Debian.
I have now installed - fresh from the Boinc site.
( Probably made a mistake by not uninstalling old version first..)

You are right.
I changed the <max_gfx_cpu_pct> in the device manager to a more unique number - 49% (for my 'work' venue).
I did an update and the /var/lib/boinc-client/account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml shows
<max_gfx_cpu_pct>49.0</max_gfx_cpu_pct>

When I call up the Boinc Manager preferences, it shows
On multi-CPU processors, use at most 50 % of the processors.

but global_prefs.xml has:
(Outside of the venue tags)
<max_ncpus_pct>100</max_ncpus_pct>

and inside the 'work' venue tag:
<max_ncpus_pct>100.0</max_ncpus_pct>

Since 'work' has only one cpu, it probably won't matter...

I'll let the current WUs finish; clean BOINC and try again..

My apologies...

Jay

Re: wrong parameter - cpu uilization

The 50% basically says that only 1 of 2 cores is allowed to be used on a dual threaded processor i.e. you can double production when changing this to 100%.

Setting the graphics to a higher value than 5% is pointless. The Screensaver for which is is designed to give higher or lesser resolution does not use more. It's specific to WCG science graphics.

If you ever made a change in local prefs, the global_prefs_override.xml will forever be in charge and none of the changes on the website will take effect. Hit the clear button in local prefs screen to return to full web device manager profile control.

At GetDeb ppa you can get the 6.10.58 deb slick installing pack of BOINC for Debian and Lucid Lynx. Don't know which other Linux distros this works.

apologies accepted, though apologies are not at all required :D

cheers
