Today I received four Beta Projects that were all similar to this:
Project Name: Beta - The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 Created: 9/21/10 Name: BETA_E200499_993_A.26.C19H10N2O2S3.36.1.set1d06 Minimum Quorum: 2 Replication: 2 My computer runs while I am away, so I do not know the exact sequence of events, but I noticed a Norton dialog box that said SONAR had detected multiple intrusions and referenced the Beta Projects. I released the projects from Norton Quarantine in an attempt to recover them, but the projects quickly failed with the following message: Result Log Result Name: BETA_ E200499_ 993_ A.26.C19H10N2O2S3.36.1.set1d06_ 1-- <core_client_version>6.10.18</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> CreateProcess() failed - The system cannot find the file specified. (0x2) </message> ]]> I had a similar error within the last week involving CPDN's new FAMOUS projects. It appears Norton permanently deleted some files instead of quarantining them. Any thoughts on how to prevent this going forward? Is it possible to still recover these projects? Thanks |

Just add boinc /data folder (you can find the full path in first lines of Messages in BOINC) to whitelist of your antivirus software, and stop boinc when you do "manual scan".
----------------------------------------Not sure if you could recover the WU, but it's ok, it will be sent to another computer. You can also look in topics like this for more info http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/search?key=kaspersky&sort=1 ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by rilian at Sep 22, 2010 11:07:31 PM] |

Hi curiously_indifferent
----------------------------------------First rule of thumb is to exclude scanning of anything in the BOINC data_dir (path printed in BOINC Message log during startup) and to declare the BOINC apps and sciences as save. Some such as Comodo and Zone Alarm have a pop up showing to ask when there's something new, then OK and have it remember what you selected. Here's a search result for Norton Sonar on our forums. Giving one more hit in April and Oct.2009. Plz read these for more product specific hints. cheers

Thank you rilian and Sekerob. I have adjusted Norton's exclusions and will consider turning off the 'Sonar' if it keeps dumping projects.
Thanks! |

I had a similar error within the last week involving CPDN's new FAMOUS projects. It appears Norton permanently deleted some files instead of quarantining them. Any thoughts on how to prevent this going forward? Is it possible to still recover these projects? I've not tested Norton since the 2009-version, but the SONAR-feature gave major problems with beta-Hadam3p-application, and deleted each new beta-executable. This despite Norton being configured to not scan in the BOINC data-directory and sub-directories. So, if things haven't improved in the Norton 2010-version, the only options seems to either ditch Norton, disable SONAR, or to let SONAR kill the 1st. wu, for you afterwards going-in to restore the application. Then restoring, there's an option to "ignore this file", so you won't have the same problem again (until next application-upgrade that is...) "I make so many mistakes. But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might." |
