Hi all !
I'm a new guy on the forum and had some questions regarding my computer specs and eventually, how I could improve them. I'm running on Linux mint and was wondering since wcg uses my CPU, what could I do to compute with my GPU ? Can I run WCG using up my cpu and another folding client using up my GPU at the same time ? (i.e. Folding@home) Are there any wcg projects using gpu ![]() Here are my main specs : Proc Intel Core 2 Duo 2 E7300 @ 2.66Ghz Mem 4go ddr2 800mhz Fanless Nvidia 9800 gt Thanks in advance. |

Welcome eric489!
----------------------------------------A couple threads concerning GPU here (or lack of) and other options. There are many more if you search but these kind of sum it up ![]() I do some collatz myself just to keep my old Radeon HD 3400 doing something... Thanks for the links Pramo !
So the only project using gpu is gpugrid... Only problem is that it doesn't support linux 32 bit yet ... See what I can do on Windows in the meantime. Thanks again ! |

Can I run WCG using up my cpu and another folding client using up my GPU at the same time ? (i.e. Folding@home) Yes, it works great on Win7 64-bit. I am using BOINC 6.10.58 (64-bit) to run WCG, and also GPU3 on Folding@home. No problems running both, but I use a dedicated GT240 for F@H to avoid any lag in the desktop. |

Welcome eric489! I do some collatz myself just to keep my old Radeon HD 3400 doing something... [edit] WCG and collatz concurrently [/edit] Welcome to eric489 from me, too! I have found these forums to be informative, interesting -- and fun. I too do Collatz so my GPU won't get bored while my CPUs are busy with WCG. ![]() ![]() |

I would be Very concerned about trying to crunch with a Fanless Nvidia 9800 GT.
It will probably fry and die. |

Will using the GPU to run F@H slow down the crunch times for the CPU running BOINC or will it just take more power? I have a Radeon 4670 doing nada at the moment.

Yes. All GPU operations (including gaming) uses some CPU for the card. CPU usage for crunching varies greatly usually from 0.05 CPU to 0.50 CPU per GPU. Einstein is largest at 1.0 CPU as well as an entire GPU. I don't know what F@H is as I don't crunch it. Easy to tell though, just crunch a wu and BOINC will tell you the usage.

Will using the GPU to run F@H slow down the crunch times for the CPU running BOINC or will it just take more power? I have a Radeon 4670 doing nada at the moment. While Folding@Home does have an Ati-client, the performance is mediocre, and it will use one cpu-core. It's possible to fool-around with some environmental-variables to get slightly better speed and use some less cpu, but the performance will still be mediocre, and atleast in my experience crash-prone. ![]() "I make so many mistakes.
