I am trying to set my options so that BOINC / World Community Grid will run 24/7. I have selected, under advanced view: activity/run always and advanced/preferences/only after computer has been in used for (-1) minutes. I found out that -1 works better than 0, because with 0 it is suspended until immediately after you become idle. I tried just checking 'While computer is in use' but that didn't work either. With my settings, after I am away for a while activity is suspended and under the messages tab I get the message seen in the thread title. I'm sure there is an easy fix to this, I just don't know it.
Also, I have my computer power preferences to never go to sleep and never turn hard disks off. Any help would be appreciated...thanks in advance! -Jake |

Hi Jake, and welcome on our forum.
----------------------------------------After a few tests with version 6.10.17 I have several comments on what you did. 1. The suspend activity when idle feature should have no inflience when your menu setting is "Run always", therefore I think that you should check that it is really the way it is set. By the way "Run always" is the main setting for what you want to achieve. 2. There is no local setting for the "Suspend activity when no user input". This setting exists only in the website profiles. What you have changed in the local preferences is the "(Compute) only after computer has been idle for xx minutes", and anyway it is ignored when you have selected "While computer is in use". 3. At least in my configuration (v6.10.17 + Ubuntu) the "suspend activity when no user input" feature seems to be buggy. It suspends activity as soon as it receives a positive value from the website profile, whatever I have done before and, worse, it never resumes, whatever I do on the computer. By the way the value to de-activate it in the website profile is indeed 0.0 as indicated. |

Thanks JmBoullier,
Being new, I actually did not realize that you could set the advanced options online. Also, it appears that the website profile was set to a power-saving option and that was overriding my custom software advanced settings. I haven't tested it out to see if changing the wesbsite profile to custom advanced settings will work, but I'm assuming it will! :) Thanks looking into it for me! |

Being new, I actually did not realize that you could set the advanced options online. Note (and never forget ): As soon as you change one parameter via the Local Preferences all parameters which exist both in Local Preferences and in website profiles are taken from Local Preferences until you use the Clear button of this facility.Beside projects selection, "Suspend activity after no user input for xx minutes" is the only one I remember right now as not in Local Preferences. |

... and still not figured out why it is, that that option was not ported into the client through 6.10.58. I've not looked into the 6.11 alpha´s yet, but doubt they've done anything. The're too busy with the notification screen and hiding the messages - events log tab, from the [ultra] advanced users.
----------------------------------------The upside is, smile from ear to ear, asked Fred of BOINCTasks to add the field, as when inserting it manually to the override file and reading the local preferences in, it works properly. Will see if a reminder could convince him to add it. Behavioral options IMHO belong to be mirrored in the client... maybe I'll plug this too into the alpha mail list, for the record. edit: duly planted in the [BOINC alpha] mail list requesting it be slided into a 6.10 point release (might be causing a slight shudder here or there)
