Hello everyone,
I would like to ask whether I would be possible to start a project searching a cure for Infectious mononucleosis? It is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. This disease is very common (95% of Europeans and North Americans are infected with it). And it can cause long lasting tiredness or even depression. As you probably know a nobel price has been given for finding a vaccination against Papillomaviridae, a virus causing Cervical cancer. Who knows, what Infectious mononucleosis, which have almost all of us, does in our body. It is a totally different virus, I admit, but it might just be as harmful. And being tired all time is not a nice thing, too. For now, there is no vaccination against the virus causing this very common disease. So how about a project about it? Hi.
----------------------------------------WCG doesn't create the projects. It's the research groups who make a proposal to WCG. If you know someone performing research on this disease then tell him to submit a proposal on WCG. Hello Falconet,
thank you for your answer. It is true, that WCG does not create the projects. Nevertheless, by creating this thread I hoped to influence on the choice WCG has to make, when several projects are proposed. Maybe you know that scientists predicting our climate have really good supercomputers predicting our climate. Predicting our climate is necessary. Sometimes, however, I have doubts. I wonder, whether calculating yet another climate model helps very much, if we all know, that there is climate change and nevertheless the politics or the energy and car industry (not to forget the clients buying gas guzzlers) just are not willing to chage their behavior prior to the very moment, when we run out of oil, i.e. earlier than in this moment, when they have to change anyway? (Sorry for this sentence, but English is not my mother tongue) So, if I had the choice between a climat project and Infectious mononucleosis, then I would chose the latter. And mabe occasionally one of the scientists engaged in the already existing projects occasionally reads this forum. And is willing to make Infectious mononucleosis his or her next project. Who knows? Martin, you have no idea how hard it is for WCG to make it known they / we as the communal supercomputer resource exist, hence Falconet's suggestion is spot on... tell the scientists. WCG themselves (through IBM staff around the world) visit many fairs. All projects that meet the requirement get slotted AFAIU. One recently was slotted, but then the ones who wanted to run for free did not sign the agreement in the end with a simple 'No' (probably not wanting the results to be freely accessible to the world science community or not able to commit to fully fund the research through to the end... publication of paper and putting the DB on-line)... not ain't going to happen.
----------------------------------------cheers

This problem of visibility hits very close to home.
----------------------------------------I am a graduate of a very prestigious research university in the Northeast USA. I just happen to live two houses away from the Dean of our Honors College. We are good friends. I think that having a WCG project or any project running BOINC software is a great calling card for an institution. So, I asked her about getting one or more projects up for this sort of activity. She asked me to draft a proposal that she could then disseminate to various colleges and departments. I spent about ten hours preparing for her a document describing various projects, complete with links to the projects, graphics, everything I could think of. I made it modular so that she could just break it down into appropriate pieces to send out. On the one hand, she said that she was very impressed with what we could do. On the other hand, I got zilch for my efforts. Why this is so tough is beyond me. |

@mitrichr - I think you are wrong you got the second most important thing for the project you talked about it and got others interested in distributed computing. and you also are doing the most important thing. you are using your free computer cycles to do distributed computing.
----------------------------------------As a cancer survivor i think of it this way. Curing cancer is WAY BEYOND ME. But i can do cancer awareness to others as well as do distributed computing to help in a small way find a cure to cancer. ![]() |
