Is there any plan to get WCG running on smartphones? With the processing power of smartphones steadily increasing it seems logical that these processors could be put to work during downtime (probably only when plugged in, due to battery consumption.)
Also, does anyone know of any other distributed computing project that runs on smartphones? Thanks. |

This comes up from time to time.
----------------------------------------You can search the BOINC forum for discussion. Basically, phones are extremely slow with very limited power and memory. Possible, but for years people have started on this, just to prove that it can be done, then given up when they start the detailed specs and realize what a poor joke the result would be. Lawrence Added: Running BOINC on a phone is like mowing a lawn using a carefully sharpened pair of scissors. I have never seen it done, and I expect that most people who can do this value their time too highly. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 29, 2010 7:15:19 PM] |

Intel based smrtphones should be out next year. X86 so should be compatible. and run it flat out at full speed for 10 hours?www.tomshardware.com/news/Moorestorn-Moblin-MIDs-ARM-LG-GW990,10799.html Running WCG on an IPhone/Blackberry/IPad while it is in your pocket is a sure way to prevent you from having children and possibly even shorten your life considerably. It will also create the need to add a new word to the Oxford English Dictionary: Pocket Blister: n. a serious burn, usually 3rd degree, from an overloaded portable electronic device which is left unchecked will result in sterility for both men and women. This is usually caused by running software applications on the portable device that cause it to generate heat and eventually melt the entire device. This most commonly occurs when individuals want to run applications designed for desktop CPU and GPU chips designed for data processing on devices designed for communications tasks. Oh for Pete's sake... perhaps we could request a client to run on the CPU's that are in our cars too... it's not like they aren't busy enough already...
Perhaps we can request a client to run on our hearing aids??? how about our mobile game boy's? I've got it... let's get a client to run on those devices in the hospitals that push fluids into people... there are seemingly an endless supply of them... !!!! GEZZZZ>... |

Is running WCG on every computerized devise a bad idea...? Yes. Why? Becasue not every device has a CPU chip that is CAPABLE of running a WCG client. It's that simple. Just because a car has a computer chip does not make a car a computer. What makes you think that a phone runs as fast as a comptuer? IF a computer takes 4 hours to complete an HCC WU, do you reall think it is going to be a good idea to run a WU on a phone that takes 16 days? The assumption that you may be making is that the phone is just as fast as a computer and that is the problem. If the phone IS just as fast as a computer, then it would be called a Computer not a PHONE. A phone is horribly slow compared to a computer and TOTALLY not suitable, nor is an electric water heater, digital clock, microwave oven, Timex watch, garage door opener, stop light, air conditioner, automatic door opener, PLC, digital camera, backhoe, washing machine, chain saw, telephone answering machine, billboard or anything else that has a chip but is not a COMPUTER. |

astrolab - you forgot lifts (or elevators - as they're known in certain parts of the world), as they also have a lot of 'up' time, but there again, they also have a lot of 'down' time ![]() ![]() |
