Just updated to latest BOINC release from 6.2.28, and have lost all the current tasks (in BOINC). Can they be manually transfered? All the data is still there.

Default installation settings. The installer did "Migrate tasks" but to no apparent avail.
----------------------------------------Installed to a new directory. Win7 installs x86 programs to Program Files (x86), and x64 to Program Files by default. As I said, all the original data is still there. ![]() |

Just updated to latest BOINC release from 6.2.28, and have lost all the current tasks (in BOINC). Can they be manually transfered? All the data is still there. This is a "feature" of the v6.2.xx-client, that it always seems to move the data-directory to the BOINC program-directory on uninstallation, even if the uninstallation is part of upgrade-process. v6.6.xx and later clients doesn't move data-directory on uninstallation, so you won't see the problem on later upgrades... But anyway, if you've not re-attached yet, it should be fairly easy to recover your data: 1: Uninstall your 64-bit BOINC-client. 2: Delete the new data-directory, created by the 64-bit client (since you've not attached to any project, you won't lose anything). 3: Download a 32-bit v6.10.xx-client, and install it, making sure it's installing at the same program-directory as the old v6.2.28-client used. Data-directory can be default or wherever you want to place it... 4: If on start of new installation all old info is now back, exit BOINC. 5: Uninstall the 32-bit BOINC-client, and re-install the 64-bit BOINC-client. If on the other hand you did attach with the 64-bit client, and has started using it... You can try setting "no new work", abort any unstarted work, and finish any other current work, upload & report. Afterwards, follow step 1-5. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. 4: If on start of new installation all old info is now back, exit BOINC. And if it isn't? I'm a little concerned that installing over the existing (32bit)directory is going to overwrite some file that tracks the tasks and effectively loses them forever. Isn't there some simple copying and pasting I can do? I.e. the "www.worldcommunitygrid.org" data folder and *.* file to the new (already attached) installation. ![]() |

Isn't there some simple copying and pasting I can do? I.e. the "www.worldcommunitygrid.org" data folder and *.* file to the new (already attached) installation. If you're going to try manual copying... On uninstallation, v6.2.xx will have put everything into the BOINC program-directory, so you'll find everything there. And yes, as you've mentioned, the default is "c:\program files (x86)\BOINC", while 64-bit is without the (x86)-part... You'll need to copy: 1: Project-directory and Slots-directory, and all sub-directories. 2: account_*.xml (one for each BOINC-project, if only attached to WCG, it's account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml) 3: client_state.xml Any other files is optional, but it's still a good idea to include them: 4: cc_config.xml (if present). 5: daily_xfer_history.xml (only present in v6.10.xx and later) 6: global_prefs.xml and global_prefs_override.xml (the last doesn't need to be present). 7: gui_rpc_auth.cfg 8: job_log_*.txt (one for each BOINC-project). 9: remote_hosts.cfg (if configured remote BOINC-access). 10: statistics_*.xml (one for each BOINC-project). 11: time_stats_log (maybe only present in v6.6.xx and later, don't remember). 12: Any *.txt-files and *.old-files If you've attached to account manager, there's also some additional files, but don't remember these at this point... ![]() "I make so many mistakes. I am glad that Ingleside's help allowed a successful recovery of your WUs.
----------------------------------------For the next time, or for other readers of this thread: 1. Use your message log to take note of the path to your BOINC data directory 2. (optional) make a backup copy of the BOINC data directory 3. Use the Advanced installation mode to check that it is pointing correctly to your data directory, and correct it if not. With these steps you should go on with your current WUs without any trouble, even when upgrading from 6.2.28. If you want to stay with a WCG version pick the latest one (6.10.57 currently) at the bottom of this list: All BOINC Downloads. It is still not the recommended WCG version but I am running it for weeks in three machines without any problem. |

Use the Advanced installation mode to check that it is pointing correctly to your data directory, and correct it if not. With these steps you should go on with your current WUs without any trouble, even when upgrading from 6.2.28. Hmm, does a couple quick tests... No, this method doesn't work if you're trying to switch from a 32-bit v6.2.xx-client to a 64-bit client, and is using BOINC's default location of the program-directory... It "is a "feature" of the v6.2.xx-client, that it always seems to move the data-directory to the BOINC program-directory on uninstallation, even if the uninstallation is part of upgrade-process." Since 32-bit uses "c:\program files (x86)\boinc" while 64-bit uses "c:\program files\boinc", the data-directory has been migrated to the "wrong" location, and is therefore not used. ![]() "I make so many mistakes.
