I came accross a couple of other badge systems on non-WCG projects, that I thought I would share. One seems quite funny:
----------------------------------------Yoyo has the familiar Bronze, Silver and Gold, but after that it's Master, Grandmaster, Guru, Spirit, Held, Half God, God ( ) Prime Grid are more wooden than funny ![]() Wiki has an almost up to date list of the WCG badges. Well, I don't know for certain if WCG were the first to bring out badges (I think they were - although if wrong, please feel free to correct me), but I'm sure it's one of the many reasons why they've managed to retain their crunchers in greater numbers than other DC projects. If so, congratulations to them on coming up with the idea - and after all, imitation is the greatest form of flattery

Bronze, Silver and Gold, but after that it's Master, Grandmaster, Guru, Spirit, Held, Half God, God ( ) ![]() That is ingenious.. Some of those could be used as hidden levels of badges, or as easter eggs in WCG. Anyway Prime Grid are more wooden than funny ![]() Yeah. That just ain't working very well..

Master 1M
---------------------------------------- Grandmaster 2M - OK we got a 1M and a 2MGuru 5M Spirit 10M - but now I'm getting jealous!Held 25M - must be some sort of supper cowHalf God 50M ![]() God 100M ![]() - of course these are for Boinc Points, not WCG runtime! So 1M Boinc points = 7M WCG, and runtime tends to be higher than points, so a cow master is more like an 8year badge. [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Jul 17, 2010 9:25:14 AM] |

I would say then that why not have also badges for the total number of points. We have badges per project which is fine. We can add another two or three to cover let's say up to maybe 50 years per project. The problem is that after that it is not practical as projects tend to end before you can reach higher levels. So having impossible project badges would not make sense.
----------------------------------------So let's have badges on the total number of points not per project but overall. Maybe skgiven this was what you meant but it was not clear for me. So my proposal would be: 10 Million WCG points = Immortal 100 Million WCG points = Angel 1 Billion WCG points = Saint 10 Billion points = God I do not like the term of Half God. It is in two words and what it means is not very clear. Compared to projects all these levels are achievable on a longer terms. It is not dependent on projects and only depends on the very existence of WCG. At the moment the first 10 members are Sanctified. Nobody yet is God. The rank 1 member would need another 6.5 years to become God. The God level has to be extremely hard to achieve yet be achievable. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Hypernova at Jul 20, 2010 6:39:53 AM] |

I don't like the use of religion related terms either. (As a scientist) I have no interest in being a "god" whereas that is supposed to be the highest rank. I think the gem terms that WCG choose are far better suited. Also the icons of WCG look far better, even though they aren't the best in the world.

Hypernova, I like the idea of one overall badge (to rule them all). Perhaps points based, perhaps even Boinc based. I would tend to agree with our scientist friend on the use of religion though; unless you could pick one of about 30 religions, and a few non-religious alternatives - all too complicated.
I would suggest the obvious and simple use of the periodic table elements. Just one badge per existing element, with every million points or year equal to the next element (there are quite a few). Yes, there are a few gaps later on, but that is hardly an issue. So after 30years (or 30M points) you would have Zn (Zinc). That would keep the masses happy. As for the Mega-Crunchers (mostly companies), an additional system would be required. Perhaps molecular weights; Myoglobin weighs 16700 daltons, so should someone ever reach 16.7 Billion points, there would still be a badge! I guess someone could come up with a better idea, but I like the idea of making it educational. |

----------------------------------------I'm almost Nickel! Have read them all but don't think I've ever bothered to comment on any badge discussion but I like this elements idea . Very granular, the next target is at least in sight and an easy way to present a total. Easy on us crunchers, no idea how hard it would be on the implementation side.... ![]() |

it's fine to discuss other badge systems, but you have to remember that, while WCG will add new badges sometime, it is not going to change any existing badges, and I agree with that. it would be very wrong to appear to penalize a member, for example who now has a Gold badge, that by rewriting the badge system then has a Nickel badge instead for 90 days while a Gold badge is then reset to be 10 years. It is not going to happen.
So feel free to suggest new badges for 5, 10, 25 years, etc and feel free to observe and discuss other system, but I suggest that nobody gets all fired up about trying to convince WCG to change what is already there. |

At the minute we are just talking hypothetically about one overall badge (probably for points), in a general and open discussion about other badge systems (even if they are only potential systems). I'm not saying we should use it here or anywhere else, but I would not dismiss it. If it was used here, a points badge would not impact on any existing system (which is based on years). Also, I am not suggesting this necessarily be applied by the techs and scientists! If I use a Cr badge (Chromium) in my signature, then my credibility says I have 24M points, and this can already be looked up, here. So if someone wants to do it, they can already do it themselves by editing their own profile. There are already plenty of less interesting signatures going around!
----------------------------------------This could also be done at one or more of the many stat sites: http://dcstat.com/ http://boincstats.com/ http://www.boincsynergy.com/ http://www.allprojectstats.com/ http://stats.free-dc.org/ http://stats.kwsn.net/ ... Either way, the techs and researchers don't have to do anything if they don't want to. [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Jul 20, 2010 4:59:07 PM] |
