I suspect this topic has been covered before and if so my apologies. I have a couple of machines in work running adverts/displays so as such they're not really using much CPU power and as they are on 24/7 it seems a waste not to put them to good use.
Unfortunately there is no way to establish a connection to the internet without physically moving the machines to an area with wi-fi coverage, plugging in wireless adapters and then moving them back again. I've no objection to shifting them once to get the client setup initially and connected to WCG however the practicality of having to do it once a week or more is none existent....plus the displays will be blank whilst I do it which is not really an option. Adding any kind of infrastructure wired or otherwise to get a connection to these machines isn't really an option either. Essentially what I would ideally like to do is use my workstation computer which is currently connected to the network to download tasks as per normal, suspend the task, copy the task from the boinc program data folder to a flash drive then copy it to the display machines boinc folder, let it run the task and then copy the data back to the connected machine. Would this be possible or am I just barking up the proverbial tree? Many thanks for any potential input and apologies if this seems like a stupid question. |

Hi,
----------------------------------------How far from a wireless access point are these machines? ![]() "Patience is a virtue", I can't wait to learn it! |

Hello oliverstirling,
Use search to find the posts with "sneakernet" in the body of the post. The general opinion is that it is almost impossible to do this with BOINC. In particular, trying this on more than 1 isolated computer is almost certain to lead to confusion and result in errors. It is possible, but because of certain design decisions in BOINC, it is so difficult that I have to advise against it. Sorry, Lawrence |

Oliver, you might be able to use one of those wireless broadband dongles that use mobile phone technology (most mobile phone companies sell them). If you cant get to the computers every week, look for longer projects like climateprediction - some of their tasks have a deadline of a year! Just go and plug the dongle in every month or so and keep a high (10day) cache and you should do lots of good work. There might be other projects with deadlines of several weeks that would interest you as well.
Of course if you could leave the wireless-broadband dongle in the system you could also run WCG. |

Oliver,
----------------------------------------You could use a LAN over mains adapter (homeplug?) which provides network connection over the mains power line. Paul.

I am sure you have explored all the options, and it sounds as though the PC is in a basement room surrounded by concrete. But moving the antenna a few feet will help a lot, since they are often blocked by the PC itself. An external antenna with some gain should work for several hundred feet, especially considering the low data rates that are required for most of the BOINC projects. This may be no good for UK orders, but it shows what is available. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833996013 |
