I installed the BOINC manager and client (6.10.17) software on a Ubuntu LL 10.04 box using the WCG .sh download. I would like to reinstall using the package manager and not create another host/device instance. Based on the FAQ I think the steps I should take are:
----------------------------------------1. Don't allow new work for host 2. Wait until all in-progress and queued WUs have completed and uploaded 3. Do a manual update to report completion 4. Shutdown the client and manager 5. Make copies of the following files from the /home/user-id/BOINC directory: client_state.xml account_worldcommunitygrid.org.xml global_prefs.xml and if present global_prefs_override.xml master_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml sched_reply_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml sched_request_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml statistics_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml stdoutdae All files in the /home/user-id/BOINC/projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org directory 6. Uninstall the current software by deleting the /home/user-id/BOINC directory (all files and sub-directories) 7. Install using sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager 8. After installation and before starting the manager or rebooting replace the files in the /var/lib/boinc-client directory with the copies made in step 5 (I'm guessing that the directory /var/lib/boinc-client/projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org will have to be created) I'm unclear on setting permissions of the files copied into the package installation directories. Does copying them into the /var/lib/boinc-client directory set BOINC as the owner or will I have to update permissions? Can anyone tell me if this is a correct approach and/or offer advice on what I should do differently? Thank you in advance for any and all assistance! Bill P Edit: corrected typo

I have to run, but taking the computer off the internet/going off-line is important, the clearing of cache is not, but prevents lost results if things go foul. Then stopping BOINC and taking a backup of the data_dir is enough before proceeding. Restore that data_dir content to where the Synaptic puts it ( in my case /var/lib/boinc-client), but you can run the install first to find out then repeat as often as you like. Verify everything is in place, WCG is still attached and only when happy go on line again. That should keep your old ID.

I'm unclear on setting permissions of the files copied into the package installation directories. Does copying them into the In Terminal simply prefix your copy command(s) with sudo (not "sudu" as you typed in 7) and that should do the trick without touching the file ownerships./var/lib/boinc-client directory set BOINC as the owner or will I have to update permissions? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by JmBoullier at Jul 15, 2010 12:55:19 AM] |
