Unable to join group?

I'm trying to install the software on my Mac and it did install properly however I get a wierd message after starting the BOINC Manager. It says" You are not currently authorized to manage the client. PLease contact your administrator to ad you to the 'boinc_master' user group."

I have no idea.....

I've uninstalled and reinstalled twice thinking it was a user setting. I'm unable to add/change or delete any settings or adjust anything. I can only press 'ok' and then it shuts down. How frustrating.... anyone have some ideas?

Re: Unable to join group?

Sorry for the slow reply - I haven't been using the software but got an email from WCG today. Tried again, same problem of course.

(Apple) Mac (6.10.17)

Ideas?

Hi it_guy_sk,

I don't know much (anything) about MAC's but I believe it has a Unix flavor at it's core and your problem might be resolved by adding the 'boinc' or 'boinc-master' to your group settings. It was what I had to do to control the client under Ubuntu 10.04.

This http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Tools_for_Mac_...ers_may_run_BOINC_Manager may help.

I see that you use Boinc 6.10.17.

I think that necessary group registrations have been automated in later Boinc versions. In the list of revisions in Boinc 6.10.33 I read:

"Mac Installer: when adding non-admin users to group boinc_master, also add them to group boinc_project; this fixes permissions error -1200 for non- admin users; show "Please wait" alert if WaitPermissions takes > 15 seconds."

This indicates that the present Boinc versions manage the user changes all by themselves.

So maybe you should try a more recent version. (At the moment I run WCG using Boinc beta 6.11.7 with no problems worth mentioning disregarding occasional screen saver faults.)

Re: Unable to join group?

Et Al,

Pretty please, do not run 6.11 unless you're a dedicated Alpha tester and are ready to put up with issues **. 6.10.58 or maybe another point release of 6.10 will be the next official WCG endorsed version. Running this version on W7 and Linux and they do fine (but a few specialist issues you can readily ignore).

RAM,

thanks for looking through the change logs. Good to know 6.10.later does it for the Maccers automatically. The tools wiki instruction Bill P pointed too is not difficult to do, but of course that only works if having admin rights in the first place ;>)

cheers

edit: ** and of course any problems with 6.11, 6.13, 6.15, any uneven releases, are reported at the developers Alpha mail list.
