I think dual boot and USB stick crunchers know full well what they're doing and some will do latter for days on end, so hitting that famous Update button once to clear the remaining Ready to Reports (Rtr) is another way. Not only that, frequent dual booters have usually 10 days to report. If the RtR is 24 hours old it will go immediately on the next connect anyhow. The 10 days was allowed for a reason... to accommodate the slower/part time crunching returners that do few tasks in a week.
----------------------------------------Sort of an over-extension, why it helps to not use that line and have it there only by those it was designed for... the users of tools such as Deep Freeze. It's been immobilized before, some projects then not happy at all with it.

There are many people that have just started to use Linux in order to participate in the CEP2 project, not just expert users. This also includes some new comers to Boinc and WCG.

which is even more reason to not stray from the trodden path... they'd not be understanding the consequence!

What about the fact that these tasks get returned elsewhere and are rather large? The larger the task the less overhead relative to overall size. Would it not be better to even the bandwidth out in this case? Have the Cambridge crowd not requested this? For sure it's important for smaller tasks, but for large ones that go elsewhere, I'm not so sure.

For those wishing to try FatDog64 and wanting to run the more demanding CEP2 project....snip. Hi, I tried this but could not get BOINC manager to start. Could you indicate which version of BOINC you used and did you have to install ia32-libs or any other customisations ?

Installation & Setup Instructions for FatDog64
1) Download the FatDog64(rc3) iso from: http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/fatdog/iso/ 2) Burn iso file to a CD (as an iso disk image) 3) Boot from the FatDog64 CD 4) Set up networking by left clicking "Net-Wizard" on the desktop, and follow the directions. 6) Open an internet browser by left clicking "Firefox". 7) At the default home page single left click "click here for pet packages". Single left click the folder "500". 7NVidia) Only for those also looking to run NVidia GPU WUs from other Boinc Projects, not WCG. Download the nvidia driver pet by right clicking on nvidia-195.36.15-amd64.pet and then left clicking on "Save Link As" and then clicking on Save. It will save the file to the Downloads folder on the desktop. Go to "nvidia-195.36.15-amd64.pet" (in the "Downloads" folder on the desktop) and left click it. It will install automatically. Restart X server (just the GUI, not the whole OS) by left clicking on the icon in the lower left of the screen and then left clicking "Restart X server". 8) Use Firefox to download BOINC for 64 bit Linux (it should auto detect "6.10.56 for Linux x64 (4.57 MB)" automatically on the BOINC download site). http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php 9) Right click on the BOINC file, go to properties and make the file executable by putting check marks in the "exec" boxes (left click in the box to make a check mark). 10) Left click, BOINC installs itself. 11) Create a file called cc_config.xml in the Boinc folder. Open it as a text file and save it after adding the following lines, <cc_config> <options> <alt_platform>i686-pc-linux-gnu</alt_platform> </options> </cc_config> 12) In the same folder you found the original install file there should now be a folder named BOINC. Open the folder by left clicking and left click on "boincmgr". 13) Attach to WCG. Note that Boinc will run in RAM, and is not saved on a restart! You can however save your working profile to a disk or USB stick, should you wish. To do so, go to the setup menu, select Puppy universal installer, and select your choice of storage medium and work through the task. |

...and did you have to install ia32-libs? For 64-bit Linux systems to run WCG's 32-bit applications, yes, the ia32-libs are mandatory. |

Jean, I did not have to manually install ia32-libs to get WCG tasks to run, but I did have to create a cc_config file and tell it about the platform (i686-pc-linux-gnu). I have not seen recent reports of 64-bit Linux users missing these libs so I think they are part of a standard distro nowadays, but it is still worth reminding that they are necessary and that people uable to run almost any WCG application should make sure they are really installed.I would comment the same for the platform name problem, i.e. people installing a standard Ubuntu and BOINC from the standard Synaptic package manager should have nothing to do I think. But if they do the solution is simple, as you show it. I am not a Linux expert either, so for the time being I stick to simple straight forward solutions like Ubuntu and its package manager. With that I do anything I need (except lovely Windows games) while crunching pretty hard for WCG. ![]() |
