First of all, I'm not trying to be 'holier than thou', considering having only one machine, but let me share this quote:
----------------------------------------"Eighty percent of success is showing up." - Woody Allen US movie actor, comedian, & director (1935 - ) When I first join WCG last month or something, I was placed last, obviously, and I think it's at 350,000 or something. I was happy to find out that so many people contributing to this project. But as my rank grows, I realize something depressing - the moment I hit 14 days on cure cancer, I'm already at rank 220,000 or something. I know your username are not tied to any machines, so to say a dead pc caused you to create new username are obviously not valid. Even in scale of rank in Country, I started at the bottom of 2xxx, and by the time I achived 14 days of work, I'm already way passed 50% of the rank. So it seems that some people joined, generate few result, and then left. Do they left WCG? or BOINC? Or grid computing alltogeher? I know this grid computing is just a donation of computer time, so it's up to people to donate or not. The thing is, if you already registered, installed, why don't just keep it running? |

That, is as they say, the 64 Million £ question... if only we knew the answer to it (obviously, and unfortunately, a few will have passed on to the other side - and thus, aren't able to contribute further). The main thing, is that you're here - so welcome fablefox, I hope you'll stay for a long, long time, and just remember, whatever you're able to contribute, is appreciated BTW, I did see somewhere, a presentation the WCG staff made to a (I think) BOINC seminar, stating that WCG does have a far higher retention rate than the majority of other BOINC projects. So, here at WCG, they must be doing something right |

yes alot of people run for a while then quit or run multiple projects or swap to other projects
----------------------------------------from boincstats for WCG 298,049 total users 95,630 active (32%) all of boinc 1,980,784 total users 312,511 active (15.8%) reasons people leave can be financial (too much energy spent on running computers 24/7) it slows me down (people believeing there computer runs too slow with boinc) decided to go to other projects (boinc or non boinc) i am sure there are many other reasons but its just fact of life people will quit but i dont mind even if they only crunched 1 work unit they did something. oh and welcome fablefox and grats on your first badge a bronze one for 14 days of help conquer cancer. hope you decide to stay also realize some people crunch more than one project.. i have done so in the past but am only running WCG now |

I'll stay as long as I can, BTW, I don't crunch 24/7. For me if my PC is on, it will crunch. I don't know how it work very deeply in technical sense (although I am a hobbyist programmer) but I set it to 100% CPU time all the time - this is because for what I do to my PC (part time student) I mostly use around 5% of Dual Core 2.98 (or was it Core Duo? let me take the list back. Ah, Core 2 Duo).
----------------------------------------The other funny bit is at my home country, whoever use less than RM 20.00 of electricity bills will be written off by the goverment (read: free of charge). But if your bill went more than that, say, RM 21, then you will have to pay in full. Living all by myself, and most time spent at work and at college, my bills is around RM 16to RM 18 - even after crunching, and at weekend, I didn't switch off my PC when going to sleep - but I do switch off the screen and printer. The modem is left on so BOINC can interact. So I crunch free of charge (and laundry, and refrigerator, etc). The goverment will review this less than RM 20 and free of charge next year, but I don't mind. So that my point, you just show up and let it run. The badge will come when you deserve it, and it not the end in itself. With just one machine I will obviously will not go into the '1 year' territory, but any job done is a job well done. The fact that nasher mention only 32% WCG user active is enough to show that should people keep things running, theoretically projects will be completed 3X faster. Oh well, each for his / her own I guess. |

BTW, the reason I love WCG not only because it's good for humanity and stood on firm ground, but it also have start and end date, objective, and progress. Grinding my PC while waiting the time alien will contact us is not my cup of tea. To watch a research phase get completed, that's priceless :-)

there are lots of people who do not run 24/7 there is nothing wrong with this... whatever time anyone donated to the project is enough... again if a person crunches 1 work unit then they have done more than most people in the world... also the calculation on boincstats shows you active if you complete 1 work unit in 14 days if i remember
----------------------------------------6,697,254,041 estimated world population 26 June 2010 312,511 as done 1or more work units less than 0.005% yes it is nice that the projects have set sub projects or set work to give to the scientists.. also the scientists give us data back from our work again welcome fablefox and i am glad to see you here and thanks for the work you have done and hope you stay for as long as you can |

I know this grid computing is just a donation of computer time, so it's up to people to donate or not. The thing is, if you already registered, installed, why don't just keep it running? I guess everybody's off on a new thread but I started following fablefox's posts around the forum tonight. He was 30 days in when I started reading. Now he's pushing towards a year! I just saw some of his thought's that I'm having now, as a greenhorn. I'm tech-ignorant, tend more to the artistic, so when I noticed a couple of signs that my computer was having problems I couldn't help but wonder if I was biting off a little more than I could chew. Was I risking my computer at a time when I couldn't afford the loss? Let's see: Joined WCG to do Clean Energy, don't have the right machine, that was a let down. I got real enthusiastic and started a climate change model over at another BOINC project. The computing wasn't going anywhere, I was staying at the same % for days. Logged in to thier forum and bothered a few people with my kindergarden questions. Turns out that BOINC thinks I have more processing power than I actually do. In the mean time I start having "hanging files" (?) and I worry that it may be related to letting something take over my computer. I have to Detach from climate project, to not fry my CPU, stick with Cancer computing 'cause it's darn worthy, and add Proteome Folding to make myself feel better. (The hanging file thing was failure with an update) I think if people (me) knew more about what they were taking on there wouldn't be such a high turn-around. So here's the outline: 1. Everybody get's a personal greeting. 2. Everybody get's a contact (mentor/babysitter/volunteer) to get them settled. 3. Points are great, badges are flashy, why not celebrate the time milestones? At least until the first year, or thier computer crashes, whichever comes first.? 4. Have a "Don't Panic" Thread hooked up to WCG Manager. 5. Show them how easy it is to set your processer at 50% and never worry about it again. Thank-you, I think I'm OK now... |

I'd never noticed before, but today hit the [left hand] Help button in BOINC while having selected WCG task and "up" popped the Help front web page which has been recently spiffed up with now 7 linked video thumbnails.
Maybe knreed and team would consider to also add a button to "Start Here Support" to the BOINC Manager button set both on the Projects and Tasks tab view. It's seemingly done in minutes. --//-- |

Thanks, it is a good starting place. The bulk of my post was me just joking about the rapid turnover at some grids.
Any clues about my firewall being off every morning? I started a tech chat @ microsoft.com and did what he said I should do before address the Security glitch. It was just more relaxing after that to laugh at my concerns, at the risk of having it taken wrong (maybe). |
