IMHO, making a GPU dedicated forum at this point in time won't solve anything and certainly won't speed up any development. All it can do is create false expectations on many people.

It appears that there are plenty of people who crunch WCG that are interested in GPU work as the questions come up regularly. Without a clear home for these discussions they end up scattered all over the place. This doesn't help answer future questions because, as already pointed out, people don't use search but ... they usually can find a forum title.
----------------------------------------Maybe make the foum title itself state the current GPU position is some way ... "GPU - OpenCL - Not Yet". Then start it out with a sticky of what WCG's current position on the topic is. It could even be made 'read only' like news forum and I bet you could stills stop a boatload of questions. Anything is better than the current, "if we don't talk about it will go away" position". Please also consider that if there is a place for these conversations then we might see posts more in the spirit of "community", "friendliness", "cooperation". Typically I see a lot of posters who think GPU is the best thing since sliced bread and posters who will say almost anything to stop the conversation. We should try to move away from these polar opposites but it can be difficult when there is no defined area to have clear conversations of more than one or two posts. The foums themselves represent a body of work over time that can be referenced and researched which works much better than random posts strewn about the place. Those of us who have looked into GPU crunnching, who have experience, who know the typical issues that will come up ... we could be some serious WCG allies not just for the crunching itself but also for the community was well. ![]() |
