Can't Get Started

Looks like the software installed correctly, but the only message I get is Fetching Scheduler List, and nothing more happens. Any idea of what I need to do from here?

Have you made an exception in your firewall for boinc?

Re: Can't Get Started

I found that there was a second firewall I didn't see that was blocking - I've cleared it up, and the connection has started working.

One more question if someone sees this - I am surprised that in the middle of the night, when I don't think anything is running, the computations stop continuously since the use of the processor is so high. The setting is at "25" - the default I believe - so I don't see an obvious issue.

Any ideas how to get that issue understood, and presumably corrected?

Hello ruttleivey

Welcome to World Community Grid!

For your particular issue, get some briefing: go HELP and look at "Troubleshooting". Next, click on "CPU Usage". You may want to go back to these HELP webpages from time to time as you try to diagnose/learn your machine/setup.

Next, check your websiteSettings: Go: MY GRID > Device Manager > Device Profiles. There lists the profiles; click on the profile you made for your machine. A webPage comes up. Navigate to "Advanced Options". Set your options there.

Start small just to get your machine doing some crunching. Learn the ropes thru reading FAQs and HELP webPages. Then go to the top as you gain experience: first at 100% and then go overclock! Again, take it nice and easy at first; better to aspire for a steady machine than an unreliably fast one. smile

Good luck.

Re: Can't Get Started

hi ruttleivey,

v.v. that 25% system load exceed pausing, plz visit this FAQ: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28585

WCG has not yet implemented this option on the web device profiles yet, it only existing in later 6.10 clients. Probably your windows is doing scheduled system main at night, such as disk defragging, then when the system is using more than 25% of the main core's CPU time, BOINC is being paused. To disable the pausing replace the 25% setting to zero.

edit: Don't know what version you have, but some early releases with this new feature confused BOINC's own science apps processes as source of system load... cat bites own tail kind of.
